The Truth about AIDS

So as a few of you know, I am in grad school.
I am focusing on the media and the discourse that it gives in the news. Well in doing my research for my Master's Thesis I come across some interesting stuff

speicifically within the media the average story cites heterosexual aids as being between 4 in 10 to 6 in 10 (depending on who is reporting the stories) I can site specific news casts if you need references for those numbers

so just how far off is the news?
Well according to the CDC (center for disease control) since AIDS was discovered approximately 750,000 people in north america are living or have died with aids.[edited a spelling mistake]

Ok you say so if we were being generous the population of north america is somewhere in the 340 million people range... give or take
so by that... if we were being even more generous and saying that the CDC got their numbers wrong by 250,000 people you could say in general terms 1/340 people in north america have aids

do the math and you find that that works out to be 0.294%! of the total population is involved in this epidemic

ok you say, well even so the studies werent saying that 40% of people have aids... Fair enough. To this I refer you to a broadcast Opera made in 1990 where she cited that 1 in 5 heterosexuals would be dead within...

so... lets see... in 1993 we lost 20% of 340 million = 68 million dead from aids... hmm

750,000 versus 68 million.... something wrong here...



getting back to the issue of reporting in the news
the CDC goes on to say that of the 750,000(ish) that have or died from aids only 58,571 of them are listed as heterosexuals whose risk is "not specified". By not specified the CDC is excluding bisexuals, drug users and prostitutes. Of course it should be mentioned that these include people who did not disclose their own risks... Think of this situation

Dr. "how did you get this sore on your genitals"
Patient "from a toilet seat" (or alternatively) " i don't know"


if one is embarassed about such things think about how possible it is that out of these 58,000 at least some were too embarssaed to answer. truthfully

so lets get back to the numbers just briefly shall we?
previously stated by the media that between 40-60% of aids cases involve heterosexuals

compare that with the CDC reality numbers... 750,000/58,000= 7.33%

of all the cases the CDC looks at only 7.3% of them are heterosexuals and of that I wonder just how many of them had contact with a dirty needle, had a 'bisexual' or gay encounter....

makes you wonder doesnt it?

I hate the media, they make things look way worse then they actually are. I know way to many people that watch shows like "Dateline" and 20/20 and take what they say as 100% fact.

Live there lives by what the tv is telling them.

It just shows the ignorance of the general public in today's world. You start throwing stats and numbers at people and 75% or 3 in 4 of the people out there will agree.

I wish the media actually reported accurate facts and useful information instead of all this crap about more terrorism. Most of the stuff on the news these days are tragic events like murders, kidnappings, Bush videos....it's enough to make me sad.

And I don't have AIDS, I gave it to the squirrel out back in exchange for a bag of chestnuts. He said chirp chirp so I think he was happy ^^
