Intel's new chipset strategy

This is a short article about intels new chipset strategy...
they are talking about designing 'specific use' processesors....
I dont know about anyone else but this sounds like its going bad in a hurry...
they call it progress... i call it sensorship in the making

Although I wouldn't mind a chip developed specifically for gaming, I think that any time a company diverify's their product line too much they start to confuse the public, this seems like a bad move for them.
Unless they limit the number of publicly available chips to 2 or 3 different types.

I agree... believe me it was a headache to try and sell laptops at staples
all they had then was Pentium-M Mobile Pentium and then regular one and that was hard enough to explain to the computer inept that wondered my way

The Pentium 4 Extreme Edition will run at 3.2GHz and come with 2MB of level-three cache

2MB of cache, in addition to the existing lvl 1 and lvl 2 cache. That is insane, and awsome. I wonder how much this puppy is going to cost though.

It likely will be as expensive as its counterpart, the 2.8GHz Xeon with 2MB cache. That chip sells for $3,692 in quantities of 1,000.

That is just crazy, there is no way people will pay that much for a chip, I love gaming, but 3700 dollars, come on.

ya i thought they were targeting 'Gamers'
not people who have successfully sued bill gates....
maybe we could use money from the hard drive settlement for this new chip....

thats goina be insanely fast.... at time being that is totally a waste of money

Ace's Hardware has some benchmarks on them. The extra cash really only helped significantly in Commanche 4 (10-15% or something like that). Still only 32bit proc, though. Apparently, AMD will be realeasing a "budget" Opteron and Athlon 64. Since the 64 only has single channel memory, the "budget" Opteron might be worth looking into.
