Microsoft (the all knowing) has 'discovered' yet another huge hole in their "most secure OS ever". It turns out that not only does it effect W2003 but every other version of Windows. The problem is in the way Microsoft coded their DirectX multimedia drivers. (Gee whadda surprise eh? John Carmack was on to something....?).. anyways the vulerability lies in the midi files... something to do with overloading the buffers in Windows based machines so that code is allowed onto your system.
Microsoft has deemed this as a "critical" hole...
seems to me thats all that windows is... one big critical hole...
on a rather humorous side note the Office of Homeland Security in the US has just recently left the Unix based systems in favor of Windows.... putting new meaning to their pledge "In God we trust"....

New spam hole discovered in windows... apparently popups run rampant on computers in large part to the Service Windows Messanger (not MSN messanger) Microsoft has stated that to help minimize popups and spam that only ADVANCED windows users (there is such a thing???) should disable this service (WinXP and 2K only)

Those Pop-ups suck ass, I dissabled that thing as soon as I installed. I don't know how anyone could use windows and live with those things. As far as I'm concerned that was the stupidest part of XP.

My general strategy has been (and will continue to be) turn everything OFF that I am physically able to and then turn them on as needed
NOTE: not the most intelligent way to do things but I like to have the say of what runs on my computer.
Sidebar: this can cause huge problems when configuring windows... but then again windows is the problem itself so what can you do?

how do you turn servicew windows messenger off?

depends where your services are (i moved mine to the start menu...) but basically
Control panel-> admin tools -> services
then scroll through the huge list of crap on there and right click on windows messanger and disable...
also found that windows DOES start up the service from time to time even if it is disabled there
you can also go to
run-> msconfig-> services and uncheck the appropriate options

It's pretty had to defend when it's the truth. Steve isn't really bashing, he is just stating the facts.
These security holes do exist.
