Get rid of windows, that'll free up some space.

LG 4040 DVD+/-RW Retail $286
or
LiteOn LDW400D 4X DVD+/-RW Retail $369

Sony's are cr@p. Though, the 20 gig ones should come out in a year or 2. However, 4.7 gigs should suffice............I guess ;)

There's -, +, and RAM types of recordings. Those do both -/+. RAM is really only used in video recording/editing and isn't really a major concern. The - only ones will be cheaper, but they only do -. -/+ will better guaranteed compatibility with DVD set tops and other drives (though, - is the data standard pretty much).

Jason has done more research in this area than I have so I would have to go with his reccomendations.

However, if you can afford a DVD burner, why not just by a 120Gig HD. It would be cheaper. Hell you could almost buy 2 for the price of the DVD burner. (Almost being the key word here).

Western Digital 120GB $144

LG 4040 DVD+/-RW Retail $286
+
Princo 1x 4.7GB DVD-R w/ case $1.49

So 240 GB for $288 with HD. $336 for 240 GB for burner. Cost after that, however:

HD:

$1.20 per GB *

Burner:

$0.31 per GB

So, in the long run the burner's the better option

* calculation based off price for 120 GB drive.
