Ya I still like sunfires but I'd have a hard time droping down to the little 4 banger. Now if you could get a sunfire with a v6 that'd be a different story.
but ya cant get a sunfire with a 6, you cant even put a 6 in one. If by chance you moved the mounts and opend up the the front and got one in there is still the problem with the power difference. You would twist that car to shit if it had a 6 in it. Far too much torque for the sunfire you would need to reinforce the unibody, "Not fraim", Unibody.
I am sure you could fit a 6 in if you really wanted to. Hell, I saw an 80's Dodge K-car with a V8 in it, NOs and everything.
As for cost the best way to do it would be to take the entire drive train out of a Grand Am (Engine, tranny, computer). You could probably pull the whole thing out of a smashed one for under a grand. You would need new mounts and possibly some Uni-body reinforcement (although the Grand Am is also a Uni-body car) but I think a good price estimate would be closer to $3000 (maybe half that if you did all the work yourself).

I'm not saying it would be a good idea, I am just saying that it could be done, and the cost wouldn't be too much.
I agree with you that modding is the way to go, those 2.4's have alot of potential. A cold air intake could give you 20-30 more horsepower for only around $250. Another cheep and easy mod would be a high flow muffler to reduce back pressure, could give you another 5-10hp.
A turbo would be great but your looking at about $600 for a new intake manifold and then maybe three grand for the turbo itself. You could get a performance throttle body for much less money, not near as powerful but it would still give you a nice performance increase.
If we're gonna talk Mazdas, it's all about the RX-7 and 8.
C'mon, Homey J...........supercharger! The big intake that completely obscures all vision on the small hood would be........life threatening. That would make it cool.
It's all fun and games until someone loses an eye; then it's a sport
