If you just want the iPod for music, just get a MP3-CD player. Kal Bob got one for around $60 at Wal-Mart with shock protection. 700 megs of MP3's = enough for me, thank you. The additional cash, ala Penny Arcade, also acts as shock insulation.
If you want 20 gigs worth of music, get a Creative Nomad. Basically the same as the iPod (music-wise), but cheaper. Last I checked, they were around $400.
If you want portable storage, but no music just get the new Zip hard drives from IOmega or just buy a hard drive bay and a hard drive. Zip will be at least $500 if I remember right and the removable hard drive bay and drive will cost you around $140 for an 80 gig drive. You could also get an 80 gig drive with a USB 2.0 to IDE convertor for about $200 (just make sure you have USB 2.0 cuz USB 1.0 will be sssllloooooooowwww).
If you want music AND storage, well, get an iPod
(though, I think they're are mods out there that make the Nomad work like the iPod. I really don't know; you might wanna research it).

Top 10 Reasons to Switch
Even though I dream of a world of co-existance, this is still a list of 10 good reasons to try a Mac.
On a side note, I do plan to get a solid state memory MP3 player, but not the iPod yet, it's just a tad expensive for someone moving out on his own for the first time. I do plan on a used Diamond Rio or something to that effect.

1. So does mine. In fact, it's working right now. Imagine that.
2. My system works well when I don't do anything with it,too (word processing, surfing the net, listening to music count as nothing to me).
3. Price to performance? No. I'm thinking winamp, Nero, and a MP3/CD (or Nomad) player to be the equivalent at a lower price point.
4. Even Windows XP has this. Also, is it really that hard to open up the software that comes with most digital cameras now?
5. Combine Nero and PowerDVD. Or just get the new Windows XP Media Centre (Ati recently released a patch so that it will work with their 9XXX series of All-in-Wonder cards so now you don't even need a hardware MPEG encoder).
6. Yes, my Ati mobility powered Dell can do that.
7. I had my Win98SE machine up and on the net here in T.O. under 15 mins with a router. Trillian (when you guys aren't saying that I should format because I'm using it........bastards
) does that and more. As does Gaim if you're a Linux/anything else user (I use both).
8. Star Office, Open Office, Word Perfect, MS Office. 'Nuff said.
9. Networking with Macs did get easier, but networking PC's to PC's IMHO is easier yet.
10. Mod it you lazy @$$.
Conclusion: I still like Macs, don't get me wrong. They're just not for me at that price point. If Mac was smart, they'd take the AMD Hammer processor (20% of the cpu market is AMD; that's still small enough to make the Mac "special"), combine it with the Nforce board that supports it (Mac and Nvidia have a history together), and put an optimized OS X on it (Unix-based so it'll work great). Then place a higher price on it cuz it's Mac. People will still think it's better ("it has to be better......it costs more" menatality) and then it will be a system that actually has balls.
But Jobs won't do that, will he.

If you're still confused about this whole iPod thing, here's Anandtech's review of the new one:

The article also contains the link to their old review of the original iPod.
