Why has no one stated, practicing laning....It sounds simple but this is where many teams fail off the break and the reason why they lose.

This. Say what you want about communication and gunfighting skills, but playing 5 on 4 or 5 on 3 off the break will win you a lot more points in a hurry.

Divide your guys into two teams. Have each team wait behind their respective start boxes. The first two guys in line come out front and tag up like a regular game. One of them will stay in back center to lane a corner (call it dorito for this example) and one will run to the dorito corner while shooting at the other team's back center. The other side will do the same. The drill ends when each corner reaches their bunker. After that, send the dorito corners down to switch start boxes, make the back centers the new dorito corners, and bring out the next guy in line to become a new back center. Repeat until people are hitting their target consistently, then repeat some more.

The rule of thumb is that your team shoots one case of paint per point. In D4 5-man, prelims will be 8-12 points depending on how well you do. Playoffs/finals will be an additional 6-12 points. That means you need to budget for 14-24 cases. Anything over 20 is a healthy budget for 5-man.

Learn to shoot with EITHER HAND, which allows you to have a smaller profile and makes it easier to...

RUN AND GUN, and keep your gun up at all times especially when moving between bunkers. It'll give you sore arms, but you'll get used to it. This is the mark of a good player. Even better,

DRILL reloads. Reloading involves a lot of messing around for new teams. Get it smooth and fast and ideally on the fly, either hand. Then,

COMMUNICATE. Tell your teammates where the other team is, and listen. Do this ALL THE TIME. A silent team is a dead team. Stealth is not a thing in speedball unless it's a 1v1 or you're moving up the snake. Before that though,

PRACTICE BREAKOUTS and putting down lanes for the other team to run through and get shot off the break. For a new team this is easy kills! For me one of the easiest ways to pick how good a team is is how fast their guns come up off the break. Work on this. Then,

MOVE. Nobody shooting at you? Move up a long way and then shoot cross field for those sweet pinch angles. You'll get shot a lot at first but this is how you learn. And often there'll be only two of you left, which is when you...

LOCK IT DOWN. Crossover your lanes. The person in the leftmost bunker is shooting to their right, the person in the rightmost bunker is shooting to their left (with their left hand dangit so help me). This way nobody can run down the middle or sides and bunker you both out. They'll have to at least work for it.

That's *super* basic and only the very beginnings, but these are things I leaned quickly when I was getting started. Snap shooting... sure, drill it. But it's less important for complete newbies than the above.
