Granted, they do admit that a government level lab could extra some text strings, but even then they question how much would be gained.

I've actually done a fair bit in this area. With DD you need to do a pass of 0's and then a pass of random numbers to be sure you've eliminated as much as you can. WIthout sophisticated tech that should make pretty much any data safely gone.

That being said, there are differing standards about which specify that this practice be done a vary number of times (the most crazy suggesting a whopping 28 times over).
