Nooo! George Lucas Makes More Changes to Original Trilogy

Post by [Fallen]TSB »

Many would argue that the original "Star Wars" films were masterpieces when they were first released (the prequels not so much). However George Lucas just can't stop futzing around with his creations.

The billionaire filmmaker's latest change can be seen in the upcoming Blu-ray release of the original trilogy. In the battle between Luke Skywalker and the Emperor in "Return of the Jedi," Lucas has given Darth Vader a new bit of dialogue.

Originally, Darth Vader just stood and watched the Emperor electrocute Luke with lightning bolts before coming to his son's rescue. Not anymore. Now, right before Darth Vader comes out of his daze, lifts up the Emperor, and tosses him to his death, the Dark Lord of the Sith yells a helpless "Noooo!"

Clip found here

If you're having having flashbacks to the awkward moment in "Revenge of the Sith" when the newly created Darth Vader screams "Noooo!" after the Emperor lies to him about Padme's death (awesome parody here), you're not alone. "Star Wars" fans far and wide have voiced their displeasure. Among the disappointed is filmmaker Simon Pegg, who wrote on Twitter that he "always loved Vader's wordless self sacrifice." Pegg then goes on to use salty language to bring home his point.

Commenters at Entertainment Weekly are equally displeased. One person writes, "WHY? WHY? WHY? Mr Lucas — do you have sooo much time on your hands that all you want to do is to simply keep tinkering with the movies? Leave them alone and go fishing!" Another jokingly posts, "Oh, now I get it. Vader threw the Emperor down the shaft because he was saying "NOOOOO…." to what the Emperor was doing to his kid. And here I always thought it was just a big ol' bear hug that went wrong..."

Still, for all the outrage, Lucas has been unapologetic about his desire to alter his movies, probably because he truly believes he's improving them. In the past, he's made Han Solo shoot Greedo first, added Hayden Christensen to the end of "Return of the Jedi," and given Jabba the Hutt an ill-advised cameo in "A New Hope." None of thoes changes have gone over well with the fans who have made him a billionaire. Perhaps one day he'll digitally remove Jar Jar Binks from "The Phantom Menace." Would anyone complain about that? Anyone?

It was altered so that Greedo shot first instead of Han being the solo shooter.

I personally have no problem with George altering the movies. They are his. He owns them. He once said that movies are never truly finished, they are only ever abandoned. I don't necessarily agree with this as there are several examples of perfect movies out there, but to each his own.

If someone likes a particular version of the film, then they should stick to watching it and STFU! :D

No such thing as too far when it's your own movie. The free market will dictate what is a good idea vs a bad idea.

If I want to spend $200 million dollars to make a movie staring cats about how they are secret agents from the future sent back in time to have sex with dogs to create the ultimate race of cat-dogs that are both faithful and look after themselves, but get stopped by birds from even further in the future who are here to stop the cats in order to save their own species, and pigs who are from the past where pigs ruled the planet and are just here visiting so they can see how far their species have progressed (the pigs don't really help the plot, but we had the sprites for pigs and threw them in any ways) then that is my decision as a human in the free market.

Heck, I might even film it in 3D! That would get some viewers.

The great thing about the free market is that if you don't like something, you don't have to watch it. What a crazy idea!

I agree with Neb. I won't be buying the Blu-Ray versions until they are the versions I want. I bought the blue box, Darth vs. Luke DVD set for that exact reason. It dropped a bunch of the extras, but it was the laser disc set transferred to DVD's. You get the special editions and the original laser disc copies. The only downside is that the laser disc copies were never re-encoded to 5.1 sound. However, easily worth it in my opinion.

The "true" blu-ray versions will eventually be out--it's just never marketed as such. You have to be a true fan to find it.

The "Real" Version of Star Wars

This box set even cuts out the "A New Hope" added to the opening credits of Episode IV in 1981. Yes, they're that original.

The Version Where Darth's Saber Is............Pink

This is the "updated" version.

George can only pull this horse$hit if you let him. Don't buy those pieces of $hit and wait for the real versions. Or just be happy with the laser disc copies. H3ll, I almost bought a laser disc player because you could get the player and people's whole libraries for about $20 off Flea-bay. I still might just so I can get Indiana Jones as a laser disc rip.

George Lucas's 1988 speech to the U.S. Congress wrote:People who alter or destroy works of art and our cultural heritage for profit or as an exercise of power are barbarians, and if the laws of the United States continue to condone this behavior, history will surely classify us as a barbaric society.

In the future it will become even easier for old negatives to become lost and be “replaced” by new altered negatives. This would be a great loss to our society. Our cultural history must not be allowed to be rewritten.

Attention should be paid to this question of our soul, and not simply to accounting procedures. Attention should be paid to the interest of those who are yet unborn, who should be able to see this generation as it saw itself, and the past generation as it saw itself.

Historical revisionists are easily frightened, but they will come back, and in greater numbers.

Article on the changes:

http://www.dailytech.com/article.aspx?newsid=22623

Best quote, of course, is from The Superficial.

Obi-Wan's Krayt Dragon howl, which scares off the sand people on Tatooine has been altered, which according to The Superficial "sounds like a pedophile getting his d!ck caught in a screen door"

George Lucas in 2004 to MSNC wrote:"Well, the [original theatrical releases] only came out to be 25 or 30 percent of what I wanted it to be."

So this is just the beginning. He's still got to change another 70 or so odd percent.

Just buy the DVD I mentioned before and upconvert. You'll thank me later.

The difference here is that he's not destroying the older versions. They are still out and easily enjoyed by those who want to.

I'm not too upset by these changes. I think compared to some of the other changes in the past they really arn't that bad.
