A couple of years ago there was a test plot in an African country, Greenpeace activists went around convincing the locals that the plants were evil (using the local religious beliefs) and the locals destroyed the test plot, they considered the plants to have come from the devil.

To make a generalization, these activists who see corporations and developed world governments as exploitative of underdeveloped nations completely exploited the local population to forward their own agenda.

Demand for food is going up, not a lot going on that's going to increase productivity other than GM.
