There's a slew of alternative handheld systems out there that are perfect for playing ROM's.


GP2X Wiz:

iControlPad for jailbroken iPhone, iTouches, etc.

(potentially the greatest, but buying one of these just might leave a bad taste in my mouth....plus it'd be super expensive).
