I finally switched. Now HOW THE HELL DO I INSTALL STUFF?

Post by [PX] Nebuchadnezzar »

So yeah, I switched to the new Kubuntu (7.04) on my laptop so I can finally stop being a hypocrite & run Linux like a real man. The only problem is that I don't know how to compile & install new applications. Any help is appreciated.

P.S. Bob, we need to get together so you can show me how to really run this thing like a champ!

Synaptic:

http://www.nongnu.org/synaptic/

Bring up a console, log in as root, and type the following:

apt-get install synaptic

If it says you don't have proper priviliges, either log out and log back in as root or, more easily, just type this:

sudo

That should give you root. Then retype what you had before. You can just bring it up again using the arrow keys. Tab will complete commands or show you options in the prompt.

That should install it. It's a GUI that does package management. It works with Debian and should work with Kubuntu. It may already be installed.

Bring up the run menu, type in "synaptic" and see if it recognizes it.

It your Kubuntu/Debian libraries aren't synced, well, you'll have to ask Homey B. He helped me with that last time.

You'll want to use an nvidia card and install their drivers for best results (ie. with beryl).

EDIT:

I just realized my nvidia comment is moot.

You put it on your laptop?!? Most likely heading for a world of hurt there, mate.

Oh, yeah you should really read this article as it's a pretty good one for your situation:

Video codecs, beryl, etc. all made easy.

Yah, Ubuntu and its Derivatives... are all based on Deb. You don't need to compile anything, In fact you will find it to be a pain in the ass to. I personaly hate the 'buntus.

I am home for the weekend, if you want to swing bye some time I will give you a crash course in deb package managment.

The basics are apt-get install package-name

Oh, what do you need to install? If you installed of a LiveCd, most of what you need for a laptop should be there already.

I just downloaded a weather updater app, and I tried to follow the instructions on compiling it, and it gave me some error which I'm sure means something to you. I'll paste it as soon as I'm back on that machine.

The reason I picked my laptop is that I have one machine for media (Vista soon), and one for games (XP), so that leaves me with one option.
