In our experience the program managed to crack a five-letter, lower case, non-dictionary password in about eight minutes

Yeah, it's amazing how unsecure stuff is. The UBCD comes with a program that completely rips off your admin password. You can change it or just make it blank.

What with all my practice on the Indian computers, I had it down to just over 5 minutes from boot to wipe.

Atleast things are a little better in the new releases...as long as you choose a fairly complicated password.

Define new releases. XP and down are easy as pie. I'll have to check if the newer version does Vista.

If you're talking about Winrar, well, all the stuff I download has the password in the filename so it's never been an issue.

I wouldn't quite go that far.

Since Word documents (pre-Office XP) are encrypted using 40-bit encryption, it is actually more efficient to try every single possible 40-bit numerical key than to attempt to guess a long and complex password, since the number of variables is smaller.

If you are using Microsoft's Office XP, Word and Excel documents can take advantage of XP's increased security features. These programs use 128-bit encryption, making the documents effectively impossible to crack by means of a key search except with a few super-computers.

So if you have a fairly complicated password and XP or greater it sounds like your pretty safe.

I would:

I did 30 of them. It didn't matter what the password was. If you don't believe me, let me have access to your machine with a cd boot for about 5 minutes and let's see what happens :)

Decrypting the files (if encrypted) would take longer, but the logon password is nothing.

Some say encryption might make your computer more vulnerable:

Steal a company's key and hold their data ransom.
