HDCP

Post by THE JEW (RaVeN) »

Apparently, very few video cards have it:

So the only people able to play Blu-Ray or HD-DVD will be the people who bought Sony's with 6200/6600's.

Well.... %$##ed Again....

HDCP licensing requires a $15,000 annual fee and a per-device fee of $0.005, i.e. a fraction of a cent.

I Think that this proves the whole damn thing is a joke. Why are the media industries charging to protect there content? If this technologies is protecting there materials should the protection not be given to manufactures for free? Money Grab.

People will not be able to turn on HDCP through a software patch since the HDCP keys need to be present during the manufacturing.

“The boards themselves must be designed with an extra chip when the board is manufactured. The extra chip stores a crypto key, and you cannot retrofit an existing board after the board is produced.”

Bull%hit, CSS keys for dvd's were supposed to be the end of piracy to. Give people a week and someone will mask the stream coming of the Blue-Ray that strips the HDCP code from reaching the GPU anyway.

Blame Canada?

lol, I just thought that that was cute.

One question, why would you want that resolution anyway? I mean from a practical point of view, not E-Penis.

No doubt. But thank the patent system. They're paying for the right to use the technology. A sneaky way for the media companies to make an extra buck. Mind you, $15 000 is a small fee in that world. They spend millions on R&D.

Probably, but the video card companies couldn't very well say "well, as soon as that protection sh!t is cracked, you'll be able to run it" now could they? ;)

1. Don't need to use AA as much
2. Complex CAD work
3. Military apps
4. For a 21" monitor? No need, really. For a 60" TV? H3ll yeah, you most definitely need it. Grab a VHS screener and watch it on your monitor. It looks like sh!t. Same idea when upscaling to a screen that large. It won't make a difference on our hardware (CRT TV's and monitors), but it will make a huge difference on those large LCD/plasma TV's. It's like when Chris played UT on his projector. It looked like @$$ (the dot pitch was horrible and he was limited to 640X480 on a 6 ft screen).

I think that it is nice to think that people will have a backlash against this as the article infers, however it is I believe, wishful thinking.

Some people like us will be upset about it, but most people will just buy a new DVD player or TV. People are generally stupid cows and will move along as the Cattle handlers dictate.
