Heck, even Tom's is talking about it:

The excuses are starting to wear thin. ;)

At least the Israeli defence department is doing something useful:

http://www.linuxworld.com/story/44466.htm

Run Linux and Windows XP side by side.

This is really cool..I'm not sure how useful it would be to run Linux on top of windows though.

Find out for yourself:

VMWare
http://www.tomshardware.com/howto/20040305/index.html

Win4Lin
http://www.tomshardware.com/howto/20011205/index.html

http://www.sudhian.com/showdocs.cfm?aid=323&pid=1178

Sudian benchmarks it and it runs at exactly the same speed in a "native" XP. Actually, it doesn't run over top off Windows, per se. It runs beside it. When Linux makes a call to the hardware, it uses their drivers. When Windows does, it uses their drivers. There's a slight overhead, but it's easily under 5% so no biggy.

Ironfist was asking about programs that run Linux in windows not windows in Linux.

I think Ironfist was looking for Cygwin not VMware or Win4Lin
KalNet SysAdmin.

Well, it was a poorly worded question by my English standards. There's no question mark (usually key in asking a question) and he asked about it after I posted an article on co-operative Linux/Windows.

Darn my inferior English skills......we engineers no speaka the Enlgish so g00d. ;)

To run Linux on top of Windows. This plainly means Linux as a Windows program. How is the English un-clear?

On a side note, I think it is just a little more then funny that I am arguing cimantics

ask

To put a question to.

No question mark or even a questionning phrase (ie. "I wonder....") means no question asked. It was a statement with self-doubt. Not a question.

I realize he's talking about running Linux as a program in Windows. I posted the links so he could run it and find out for himself. He's unsure--with a bit of time he could be certain as to how the performance of a hybrid computer rates. Also, he could realize the benefits of running both native Win and Linux programs. They're slightly different than the Israeli, but a decent hypothesis could be proposed. VMWare runs them co-operatively while Win4Lin runs Windows in Linux.

Heck, now that I look into it:

http://sourceforge.net/project/showfile ... p_id=98788

Just run the bloody thing and find out. ;)

It wasn't a question at all....it was a statement about me being unsure of "how useful it would be to run Linux on top of windows".

It seemed to me that's what Jason's original article implied the Israeli software did, but perhaps I didn't read it carefully enough.

Yeah, that's what I thought you were saying.

This is just another step for the "hybrid OS."

We've got co-op, Win in Lin, and now it's completed with Lin in Win. It's usefulness is, really, just for those people who want to be able to run a Linux app while in Windows.
