Opera 8: THoughts?

Post by Ghost [PX] »

I decided to go back to my original port over to see what the new version was like...
Shortly after version 7 I switched to Mozilla because Opera was getting to slow and bloated.

So I downloaded Opera 8 and gave it a shot. I must say, the speed has improved (I think) but I still hate the interface... My internet connection is rather sluggish due to all the morons leeching off it, but from what I could tell, its at least on par with Mozilla for rendering speeds. Anyone else have any thoughts?

Can't say that I do. I'm still on version 7. I didn't even know about the update.

For surfing, I actually prefer Opera over Mozilla. The mouse gestures seem smoother, the switch between tabs works quicker (Opera caches to the hard drive), and it just seems more familiar to me.

However, I also use Firefox because of the extensions and better compatibility. If Opera ever got these it would be no contest, but until then both will remain installed.

I havent noticed any difference between Mouse Gestures in either of them, but I find I prefer Mozilla for browsing... Opera's interface just seems too clunky to me and I just dont like it...

Meh, I'll stick with Firefox for now. Its the best browser I've found... It actually comes closer on the [url=http://www.webstandards.org/act/acid2/test.html]Acid2[\url] test than anything else I've tried.

On a side note:

I'm glad I downloaded it. 8)

I find most of the clunky stuff in Opera I can turn off. I'm more (ie. immensely) annoyed by the memory leaks in Firefox. They need to pull a Google--through gobs of cash at programmers.

And then begin their take-over of the Internet as we know it. ;)

Memory leaks? How can you tell? I've had the occasional crash with new plugins but that's it for firefox problems.

It pops up the error report b!tching about error reports after Firefox crashes. Also, comparing the page file size for Opera to Firefox shows a smaller footprint.

My diagnosis would be memory leaks. That, and a bunch of computer people smarter than me said so on a couple of forums. ;)

Well, their multiple monitors give them enough of a tan that they can be considered trustworthy.

Maybe. ;)

I've noticed them too. If I leave Firefox going for too long (Read Days), It starts to crawl and eventually crashes, but not all that often, and Its fixed by closing it down every few hours which I usually do anyways.

Yeah, I usually have at least 20 pages open so it mounts up pretty quickly. If there was an extension for Firefox that remembered you're open pages, I probably wouldn't use Opera as much. However, the only one that I found added all this other nonsense.

You mean SessionSaver?

It didnt add anything and it works great... Remembers my tabs and saves them even when the browser crashes.

The new Opera got rid of its ads so it's completely free now. Honestly, the reason I still keep Opera around is because I like their mouse gestures better. They just feel more........fluid........and less anal about getting (for example) down-right exact compared to Firefox.

Personally I've become accustomed to Firefox's Mouse Gestures (Really I only use, back forward open and close) but I agree they arent quite as fluid as Opera's.

However, I find Opera's interface to be clunky badly managed and just plain ugly. I just cant stand using Opera anymore, even with the ads removed.
