Windows XP users: do NOT install Automatic Updates until advised by CCS
Microsoft is distributing the "SP2" upgrade to Windows XP users beginning Monday August 16th. Some SP2 testers have reported significant problems after installing it. As we are unsure how it will react with other software and systems used at Ryerson it is imperative that you NOT install this upgrade on any Windows XP PC that you will use to access a Ryerson-hosted system or use Ryerson-supplied software until further notice.
To see if your PC runs Windows XP press the "Start" button and look on the left side of the panel. If that doesn't show you the version name, then right-click on the "My Computer" icon and choose "Properties".
If you are NOT running XP disregard this warning.
If you are running XP then press Start > Settings > Control Panel > Systems > Automatic Updates tab, and under the "Settings" section choose the option "Notify me before downloading any updates", then click OK.
When next prompted that there are updates available do NOT agree to download them until CCS sends out another message indicating it is OK to do so. CCS will be testing the Windows XP SP2 upgrade with our centrally supported applications and will report our results to the community as soon as possible.

XP Service Pack 2
I'm sure you're all aware that it came out recently. You may not wanna upgrade. Case in point, here's Ryerson's stance on it:

Forgive my cynicism, but I somehow doubt anything could improve XP...
I'd wait a few months before upgrading... Service packs that M$ puts out tend to be rushed and buggy as shit... Kinda like their software.

from what i have seen i am staying away from this shit
you cant install unsigned drivers
once you permanatly block a pop up you can never reverse the change... so if you block one like a yahoo game which some people will do it will be permanatly blocked
i'm fearing the customer calls that are going to be comming my way

All I know is that Ryserson is the most pro IBM/Microsoft university on the planet. Our former comp head is now on the board of Microsoft and our webmail is coded to the point that it barely works in any other internet software other than Explorer. When they say that Microsoft has problems, I fully believe them as that they are the b!tch that sucks Microsoft's c0ck.

Starting next Tuesday, April 12, computers running Microsoft Windows XP without Service Packet 2 installed will not be able to block the upgrade.
So if M$ can force an install of an update, whats to say someone else couldnt do the same with other Malicious code? Oh right... THEY CAN!
Thats secure for yah.

Agreed. There are also still some programs out there that dislike SP2.
The bloody thing killed the LAN drivers on my gaming partition. But that might have been a blessing in disguise what with finals coming up.

My parents had that same problem and it took all of 30 seconds to fix...
Google Steve... Its the way of the future..
If you dont fix it, SP2 will just download and attempt to install repeatedly and fail everytime.

I don't know for sure, but I don't think that the EULA said anything about required downloads. I saw stuff about not allowing updates, and terminantion of contract if there was a breech of contract. Unless there is a clause that they can change the EULA at any time, then this could go to court if someone really wanted to do it. It is technically a violation of private property, as well as internet terrorism of sorts. I've refused SP2 for quite some time because I don't want my PC to die from their sloppy code.
Until you find something worth dying for, you're not really living.

I'd bank on this. Who here has actually read the EULA? It could still be shot down in court, though. Borland's EULA said that it gave them the right to search your house at any time for no reason. It, obviously, lost when challenged in court.

As an experiment I have turned off the updates option on my PC. Also, maybe they will be sloppy and require you to accept an EULA before the crap installs.
I may then try to remove the update, should it install. I don't know, since I don't really keep track, but have they improved the stability, or compatability at all? What I mean is, no unwanted firewalls that prevent programs from working?
