I'm not Catholic, but I respected him. He was a good man.

About fucking time is all I can say. Whether or not he was a good man I cant comment on, but it was well past time the Papacy has had some fresh blood, regardless of whether ot not it will do any good. He was far too conservative for the era and I hope that they replace him with someone with a little bit more progressive stand-point.

Good morals are the same regardless of era. Conservative doesn't mean backwards, it means not turning your back on your heritage, and not compromising morally, simply to make others more comfortable in their own degradation. I'm not looking to get into a flame war, but your comment warrented a response.

I agree that morals have no boundry and that conservative doesnt mean backwards. However, the recent pope has been anything if not backwards and his conservative slants have been more harming to the church as a whole (In my opinion) than good. If he could have applied said good morals to ideas that were more progressive perhaps I wouldnt have had a problem. THen again, perhaps the problem with the church is not just the pope, but its singular inability to adapt to modern time (Dont want to start a flame war here either, personal opinion here). I understand not turning your back on your heritage, and I respect that fact when it is preserved. But there is a very large difference between preserving heritage and clinging to it. Moral degradation is one thing, adaptation and acceptance of modern ideas is another entirely.

This is a major problem i have with every christian religion. The sheer inflexibility of it boggles my mind.

I'm not religious in the slightest, but I feel that this has been too long in coming. The Pope hasn't been able to adequately lead the church for quite some time, and should have resigned long ago, in my opinion.
However, I suppose that's a moot point now....

Conservative? how do you figure JP2 was practically an NDP hardliner! Look at the evidence:

Made peace with the Jew!

Un-excommunicated the Greek Orthodox Church!

And to top it off he apologized for the Inquisition! Damn it people we were saving souls! and now we have to say sorry for it ! what a world!!

So much for not flaming

seriously... NDP was he!

Sorry Jew for stealing your gap think.

I understand the need for progress, and although I am conservative by nature, I also support the progress that this world so dearly needs. I support social health care and education, as well as other things, but what upsets me is that people in general call Christians backwards because we don't agree with certain policies and procedures that are blatantly against our beliefs. I am actually more angered by those who claim to be Christians, who support such things, as it makes all Christians appear to be hypocrites, and the rest of the world can't understand why we aren't all like them. Essentially, because they compromise on what they claim to believe, it is assumed that all Christians should. Trying to argue against something you don't believe as a Christian is often like fighting a seige when the enemy sappers are mostly made up of traitors from your own side, inside your castle. I don't expect the rest of the world to conform to my beliefs, but the world expects Christians to conform to it, and that is what I find unacceptable. I would support a Pope who looks to the future, but he must also have integrity.

Here Here!

I completely agree, awhile back I remember when some people wanted to modernize the bible. They wanted to bring it up to date with modern beliefs. I believe the core of the issue was Gay Rights. They wanted to remove the Anti-Gay portions of the bible and get ride of the “backward” and the lack of “Toleration” in the church.

But I figure if we are going to drop the gay part, why not go for broke! Lets get rid of the whole damn marriage thing entirely, Free Love for all. Christ was preaching love right? And to hell with the whole Sin thing entirely! Society tells us to go out and enjoy life, would cares do what you want!

The whole idea of updating a religion is pointless. It defeats the point of having beliefs if you change them every time a fad comes along.

Exactly
When Steven Seagal kills a ninja, he only takes its hide. When Chuck Norris kills a ninja, he uses every part.

Chuck Norris and Mr. T walked into a bar. The bar was instantly destroyed, as that level of awesome cannot be contained in one building.

Of all the popes, one of the better ones IMO.

Not as much "fun" as that surrounding the death of JP I.

All I've got to say is what Pop always told me:

And at last call the lights go up
And its all because of people like us
Late night people like us
