Benchmarking

Post by THE JEW (RaVeN) »

Someone's finally gonna help put the age-old question to rest:

http://www.anandtech.com/linux/showdoc.aspx?i=2218

What performs better--Linux or Windows? Without proper benchmarking software we can only guess. I think this is an excellent sign of Linux going mainstream. When people are interested in the performance of a device/software package, it shows that they're considering buying into it.

Today, we want to introduce everyone to our GPU Linux benchmarks and how we will run them in the future. This isn't a comparative analysis yet, but we won't keep you waiting long for that.

so they don't have it done yet there just saying it's comming out?

Fortunately, we have been graced with some very talented programmers who worked with us to build a benchmarking utility similar to FRAPS (on Linux) that we may eventually port over to Windows as well.

So if they decide not to port it over to windows how are they going to compare the difference between windows and Linix benchmarks if there not running the same benchmarking program?

They'll use the same hardware. That's the whole point. The benchmarking program will show how the games run. The benchmarking program only takes info from other programs. It itself is not a benchmark. This will show how games (for example) run on the same hardware in Windows and in Linux. Thus, one can make some assumptions on how well Windows uses hardware compared to Linux and vice versa.

Yeah, there's nothing done yet. But they have to generate web hits somehow. ;)
