Gray got a maxtor serial ata drive, 80 gig. They cannot get it to work. They went to cutting edge and they said that a pirated verion of xp was probably the problem and they bought a copy of xp home. He's pretty pissed it still doesnt work and he put all this money into a drive and xp. Jason we are lookin towards you. SOS. Suggestions are needed.

what the drive is doing is fully installing the OS and then crashing

any drivers put in after that point crash

It's not defective we went to a regular drive and we get the same error. When we install drivers that is when it fucks up

That is total BS, I can't believe they blamed it on a pirated version of XP, I also can't believe that you believed them.
Are you installing the copy of XP with SP1 already integrated? That's what I'd suggest. Also make sure you have the newest drivers for your SATA controller.
Also take a look at what drivers you are installing, make sure they are up to date, and check for compatability issues,

All drivers were the most updated so you can sratch all those out.

I said **** it to the SATA drive and put in normal drive. Guess what XP and 98 Didn't want to install on it.

Guess what did work

2000 Pro.

so this means it's not the Sata drive at all, i'll try to put the SATA drive back in and put 2000 on it, I will update everyone of the progess.

Are you installing the copy of XP with SP1 already integrated? That's what I'd suggest. Also make sure you have the newest drivers for your SATA controller.
Also take a look at what drivers you are installing, make sure they are up to date, and check for compatability issues,

so what you said about I beleived them is not true, I mearly wanted a good copy with service pack installed to try.

Background info needed first:

I assume that you're using the DFI board that you bought?

Things that have been verified (from your posts).

1). The SATA hd installs windows, but frys whenever a driver is installed.
2). The PATA hd installs windows, but frys whenever a driver is installed.

This has been verified with pirated and bought version.

OPTIONS:

1 ). Uh, the hd is set to Master on the Primary channel, right? This probably applies more to the PATA than SATA
2 ). Go into BIOS. Go to either the Advanced or Standard config. If the hd is set to "auto", click Enter to manually configure what it is. It should just pop up automatically.
3 ). Set the SATA options to either "base" or "raid disabled." You might have the board SATA options set to "raid"
4 ). Disable S.M.A.R.T.
5 ). Verify that hd works on another computer. If you don't have a SATA mobo, bring when you come down for the church picnic tomorrow and we'll test it at Homey B's place (see thread in General Discussion)
6 ). Did you original copy of XP have scratches on the CD?
7 ). Did you attempt to install the chipset drivers first before the other drivers? Often there the first ones needed.
8 ). Read the manual. Maybe there's some jumper you misplaced.
9 ). RAM in the right order. Abit goes 3 to 1. Make sure it's in dual channel mode. (highly unlikely)
10 ). Bring it to the DSL basement.

QUESTIONS:

1). How the devil did they find out you where using a pirated copy? This should have NOTHING to do with the hd working or not unless you updated the service packs without following my guide posted here on the board. CEC installed a PIRATED copy of Win ME on Homey B's laptop. If they're giving you trouble..............uh:

Pot...............Kettle...................Black.

2). Bought XP Home??????? Too many new variables.

I'm not an idiot, most of the time it crapped out at mass storage device

All new drivers were tryed and result stayed same.

I think it's a hardware issue or bios rather then and OS problems at this point.

Possible from what i've seen 1 memory stick might be bad

yes but system is still unstable with IDE Drive and SATA disabled

also when downloading or installing sometimes corrupts the data

on either plateform

2). Nope as in it's still says "auto" or nope as in "I didn't try this."

4). Eliminate all unnecessary variables when trouble shooting. It's also horrible on networks (ie. bad ping).

5). Stick the other hard drive in another mobo with SATA. If it works, it's not the hd. Bring the hd down to the church picnic and we'll test it.

6). That's fine. Does your board have SATA? Are they the same chipset? Prolly not. Gray's does. If the scratch is on the SATA part, it will still bugger up. Again, is the CD scratched?

9). Ya, I know who I'm talking to. You prolly didn't bother to RTFM and find out the RAM order. For example, the Abit NF7-S says to install the RAM in slot 3 first, not slot 1. Find out what the manual says. Setting up dual channel is often different on individual Nforce2 mobos.

Suggestions:

1). Run Memtest.

2). Check the DFI website for incompatibilities like Homey J said.

3). Use the hardware in another setup (ie. Homey B's which is essentially the same)

Why so hot?

1). It's new technology. Everything's getting warmer (*cough*Prescott*cough*). SCSI's also a heck of a lot hotter than SATA.
