RNBD 2004 MEGA LAN

Post by [Fallen]Thanatos »

ok so i have talked to the Kal and Thumperup about this and they agree that its a great idea. (if we can make it work)

Now the idea is to have the 2004 lan mega sized. we can make flyers and advertize in the papper and on the net. Kal will make a registration site on the web for people interested in the lan.

I say if we dont get 100+ people then we just cancle it and have a small one.

If we get 100+ people then we can rent a hall for a weekend get it setup buy prizes and make $ for future lans. We can upgrade the servers and get more and better prizes for the next lan.

I say admission is $20 a persion and $5 for watching. hell if we only get 100 people then thats $2000. the hall will cost about $200 a day. hell even $30 is still a great deal. We can have good prizes depending on the amount of people that register.

I would like to know all your commets on this idea. I think its a great idea an i know we can pull it off No problem.

I think that you are over-simplifing this idea. The Logistics of a LAN this size are very complex. I will admit that there are somethings that we can drop that will make easier, but the extra load more then eclipes these benifits.

I am interested in the general interest in this Idea however. I will create a poll out it.

Oh, Thumperup, if they are really into this, you and me have to put our High end systems through hell and back. I trust that the Quad Machines I have can handle any Q3~based games but it is BF1942, UT2K3~4, and similar games that might pose a problem.

Its a good idea in theory, but we'd have to have payment and registration in advance, otherwise, someone would have to foot the bill for the hall.

Finding a hall to accomadate a LAN party could be somewhat difficult, since most of us usually just camp wherever it is. I dont know how it worked at Smackdown though, so please, fill me in on this one.

The sheer logisitics of setting up a network for even 50+ people is massive. It gives me a headache thinking about it, plus we'd have to rent the hall for 2 extra days at least, one for cleanup and one for takedown.

Those involved with organization wouldnt be able to play many games due to the amount of problems that would crop up.

We dont really know how much the servers can handle right now, granted that can be solved, and Bob is getting another server over the summer it seems, but if we cant handle the load, we're screwed. Also, the amount of network cabling and ends, and switches would cost a pretty penny.

Alcohol would have to be banned of course, not a problem for many, but for those that enjoy a beer with their quake......

We'd have to advertise this thing WELL in advance, Im talking like we'd have to start now, and make arrangements accordingly to ensure we had enough people.

I'd love the idea of a megalan, and the cost doesnt bother me that much, but the setup and takedown just makes me tremble with fear.... Granted if the majority decides to go with this, I'll back it 100% as usual and do all my usual tasks associated with Lanning, but its alot more work running a large scale LAN than it seems.

Also, it destroys the small personal feeling of the LANS that we have. Thats not really an issue, but I'd still wanna have a small Red Neck Beatdown, just for us guys without half the hassle.

Theres my 2 cents. If I think of any other counterpoints, I'll let you know.

as easy as getting 100+ people sounds it is going to be hell..

also I could help out with setting this up but the question is do i wanna?? not really I wanna game.. also when are we thinking of this?? like next year?? cause this summer we have smackdown and we have rnbd so I dont think we need a super big lan.. but it could not hurt to start thinking of stuff.. this is big guys.. we have talked about this before thump and me and love the idea.. I just dont wanna see us try this and have it not work at all.. also at a event like this we need power back up and do we want the net there or just lan...

I agree with you TSB, if we start planing for a 2005 event, the kinks should be worked out. More to Follow school now ...

Well 2003's Smackdown was at the Lamplighter in London, so if you weren't from the area, you could get a hotel room. I'm pretty sure that the four of us that went together stayed in Ingersol, but I might be wrong.

I'd wanna check out how much LDCSS charges for rental. They're in London which solves most of the problems (sleeping, eating, getting people, etc.). I'd be more open to the MEGALAN idea in 2005.

Like I said in the poll, we can go 1/2 way and advertise this summer one more if you want.

Lets work on getting this summer LAN to work without a hitch and possibly even break even this time.

We can advertise it, but I dont see any reason to myself...
If we can get enough people without advertising there is no reason to.

The mega LAN is a nice idea, but fuck would it be alot of work and planning. We'd have to have people watching the network 24-7 to make sure people didnt fuck with it, a tech desk for help, people to make sure there wasnt theft etc...

Baby Steps people...

If we can't get enough people without advertising, I see no problem in posting the summer RNBD on lanparty.com or even running a few small adds in a local paper.

I'd say no more than 40. I'm not fully aware of the electrical situation. Have to get an estimate from Homey V or B. Clean up would need to be a bit more extensive, though.

Theft, viruses, etc was no problem

there was a checkout and nametags at smackdown volunteers made it work

there was a virus at smackdown that person took care of it.

It was announced this is fun event 0 tolerance for hacking viruses bla bla bla

Yup, the main one. Everything else pretty much revolves around it.
