It's even more interesting that Nvidia claims that its card will end up four times faster in Doom 3 and seven times faster in Half Life 2.

Does anybody else feel a 5800 fiasco coming on? I thought Ati's claim that the r420 was going to be twice as fast as the 9700 pro was a bit much. Even if Nvidia is talking about 1600X1200 with max aa and af, that's still some tough PR bull$hit to swallow. I thought they were getting back on track. I only hope for their sake that they actually are.

Either that or now is the time to invest in Nvidia.

Things get even more interesting with the R420. We actually might see another performance jump like we saw from the 8500 to the 9700 pro.

Latest forum rumors say that the r420 is 4 radeon 9600 cores "glued" together. Only 75% need to work for the spring launch and that 100% in response to nv40 in summer. Thus, 12 pipelines in the spring, 16 in the summer.

If that's true then this seems like a kind of half-assed response. Nvidia comes out with a new faster chip so ATI sticks 4 of their old ones together and calls it somthing new....

I believe I read an article listed on Hard|OCP stating that NVidia had scrapped the NV40 and moved right on to the NV45, calling it the NV40 because of ATI's theoretical performance...

Actually, this is the smartest thing they could do. Look at the performance of the 9600 pro versus the 9700 pro in the HL2 benchies. The shader instruction set is much better on the RV360 than the R360. Then combine 3 of those together. You're looking at roughly double the performance after overhead losses.

The Geforce was just 2 tnt ultra cores with a T & L unit combined.

Besides, if it runs everything super fast, who cares?

It's their implementation of designing for failure and redundancy that's interesting in all of this, overall.

It seems that even they don't really think that the new chip will be 4 9600's "glued" together. It's just a waste of transistors and the heat generated would be huge.

Granted, they don't think it would be 4 physical RV360's glued together, but they do think it would be the processing instructions of 4 glued together (well, 3 that work intially and 4 for the update).

Beyond3d is just as reputable as [H]ardOCP. They're just not as well known. B3D is so technical that a video card whore like myself begins to skim through their reviews. ;
