Laptop with Linux... slight problem

Post by [PX] Nebuchadnezzar »

I wasn't exactly sure where to post this, so I figured I'd just put it here.

I just got a 486 laptop from my aunt finally. I'd been waiting for a while so she could bring it with her from holland rather than ship it. (sorry Paul, she could only get one) it has 20megs of ram, and currently a dutch install of win95.

I want to put linux on it, but here's the problem: it has no cd-rom

is there a pure net install for debian or other distros, or a floppy to get the process started?

I really need linux on it since I don't understand Dutch (though it's a great way to learn) and don't want windows either.

Yes, there are remote installs

Post by [PX]Kal Bob »

There are remote installs. I know of one for debian. Sorry I don't keep up with the others. For me I can make Debian do what mandrake and Red Hat do any way.

Does it have a CD-ROM?

Post by [PX]Kal Bob »

Does it have a CD-ROM?

If so, do a normal install then when it ask where to look for packages, select http or ftp instead of CD.

I do believe that there is an option to make a boot floppy which will deal with most of the installation up until you need to select how to install (ie cd rom, ftp, http, etc). Check the cd and see what the alternate install options are.

No, check the Debian install disk and the Debian website. Im fairly certain that you can make a bare bones floppy install and get the rest off of FTP.
