Do you want a water cooling guide put up here in the forum?

Poll ended at Mon Apr 07, 2003 2:48 am

Yes. I've been considering doing a H20 system myself.

Yes. THE JEW has no idea what he's talking about, but he's a lazy @$$ and needs to contribute to the forum.

I don't care either way (thus, it's a waste of THE JEW's time and he won't bother).

Water Cooling

Post by THE JEW (RaVeN) »

Just wondering who's interested in it. I've been researching it off and on for the past 4 months and would like to think that I've amassed a somewhat knowledgable database. I'll start posting a weekly guide if the poll passes. If no one shows what I deem to be enough interest, than I'll just let it drop. The knowledge that I might impart here would be the same that I apply to my own system that I intend to build over the summer (take that however you want). Basically, it's up to you guys.

No I think each forum should have its own polls relating to posts such as this. If someone wants something posted, ex. Jasons water-cooling guide, ask for a vote and a poll shall be made.

Ijust figured since the main goal of this poll was hardware related and, in theory, that only those interested in hardware would come here to vote on it. Also, I thought the polls sections was only relevant to the frontpage polls. I duno, if it's a big problem I MIGHT be able to move it. Should I start another poll to see who wants it moved? ;)

I have all the watercooling things but need to find out if my copper spacing will work with my Athlon XP before I hook it up.

Is it an anodized (non-conductive) shim? If not, I would highly recommend getting one. Also, some dielectric grease would be good. If yer too cheap (like me) petroleum jelly will work as a substitute (ya know, the big jar you stock by your pr0n magazine collection for........various reasons ;) ).

More to follow if enough votes go thru for the guide.

Gimick? No. Frivolous? Perhaps. Gimmic to me is something that only supplies aesthetics, doesn't do what it's supposed to, or does something of no value. I would argue that water cooling doesn't fall into the gimmick category. Why?

1). Some water cooling system are ugly. Clearly they were not made with aesthetics in mind (I've got some real ghetto examples).

2). They do what they're supposed to. Which is what? Provide a way to silently cool a processor and still allow you lower operating temperatures. This can either result in less "wear and tear" on the cpu or the ability to overclock it further.

3). Value, to me personally, is the ability to last long and do a job well. As opposed to air cooling, water cooling has the ability to be good for all manner of processors. For example, Danger Den's Maze 3 waterblock (WB) is good for the P4, P3, Athlon, Hammer, Itanium, Xeon, C3, and (conceivably) any other processor on the planet. It will also be able to meet the necessary heat requirements of future processors (Intel and AMD have speculated that other forms of cooling rather than air may be necessary within the next 2-3 years).

However, it's not without its cons. Value also means the ability to be bought relatively cheap. Water cooling, typically, is more expensive. However, the guide will show one how they could make a watercooling kit for roughly $100. Granted, this is more than your average $15 air cooler. But to achieve similar overclocking abilities or similar quietness, one would have to look at the SLK coolers. These are either good overclockers or quiet, but never both at the same time (unlike watercooling). Plus, your SLK's usually $70 for just the heatsink (no fan) and are EXTREMELY heavy (around half a kilo of copper).

But hey, it's not for everyone. It has both advantages and disadvantages.
