Windows XP privacy guide

Post by Ghost [PX] »

A guide on how to disable most of the "call home features" in windows XP and make your home PC just that much more secure. Of course you could just run linux and not have to worry at all, but where the fun in that?

Actually, here's a guide to a 'perfect' XP install (quotations because In my opinion, that's as perfect as a Win install could ever be.) BEWARE there is mention of a low level format (it explains there) which is risky, so proceed with caution.

Only risky if you have multiple partitions on one hard drive. If not, then its a good thing to do.

WHY ON EARTH WOULD YOU LOW LEVEL FORMAT THAT IS RETARTED

That is only done when assembling the drive in the first place, remaking the sectors and so forth.

not retated at all. sometimes old system files conflict with a fresh install, and this gets rid of thet problem entirely since the drive is written with all zeros leaving no data left at all.

A good scan disk will mark out all the bad sectors, so a low level format is not needed

maybe not, it's not something you would normally do, but I did it with an old drive just to try once.

1. when installing a new operating system, a low level format can never hurt. Thats the bottom line. It takes longer, but provides a cleaner install and less junk left on the driver (as you all know a normal format doesnt get rid of everything).

2. You dont need to scan disk if you use a journaling filesystem like EXT3, but of course, only 2 (Bob and myself) are running dedicated linux and so that option is only available to us.

Homey V, some of us are running dual boot so you can, potentially, tack on one more person.

Though, I'm not sure if I'm running ext 3 or ext 2 (Homey B never actually told which ext we used).

Its very simple, you just delete the partitions on your hard disk and create new one.

Sorry Jason I wasnt sure if you were still running the dual boot or not. That makes 3 people running linux.
