New Review Style

It seems everybody has taken the [H]ardforum discussions to heart and are now recording their own benchmarks to test out video cards to prevent any optimizations. Firingsquad recently did it in their 5900 review. Beyond 3d is also doing it with their 5200 Ultra review:

Yeah, that's Tenebrae Quake. They're using it to test shaders and heavy shadow usage (ala Doom ]I[ ). Kinda cool to see a DirectX 9 vid card brought to its knees by an original Quake engine. ;)

But how long will it be before Nvidia optimizes for the new benchmarks? Its good to see the community rebelling and refusing to swallow marketing propaganda and in doing so discourage unfair and unethical optimizations on the part of the parent company....

I almost sound like a revolutionary leader fighting a political battle, kinda scary.

That's it, though. The review sites aren't releasing them to the public. They can't optimize for that specific benchmark. If they optimize the ENTIRE game, that's fine. The game runs better with the same visual quality and we're all happy.

Optimization without visual quality loss = teh b0mb!

Cutting corners to speed it up and make things look crappy = switching to other vid company ;)

Ah good! Just a lack of info on my part. This should be interesting then. I cant wait to see how Nvidia handles this shift.
