Everytime you go to shut down the damn thing just reboots

Does anyone remember which to switch in the Bios to make it shut down properly

i'm on a crappy computer with Crappy dial up right now

IE keeps crashing when trying to search google.

I want to know before I leave here

When it reboots, turn the power supply switch off. A bit of a hassle, but it'll work.

But I guess some people are just too lazy and they want it to shut down properly

if they want a computer that works properly all the time they should just, I don't know, get a.... shit, can someone help me out here??

Maybe there is some kind of faulty driver or somthing that is making the computer re-boot when it is unloaded.

I think it is something with power management in windows or Bios

The last several posts were deleted beacuse they:

As for the BIOS Problem, I really couldnt say what the problem is. I imagine that your right, and its somewhere in the BIOS power settings. Best of luck with the problem.

right click on my computer, choosse properties, choose the advanced tab, choose startup and recovery uncheck automatically reboot. then instead of rebooting, you should get an error message that will help track down the problem.

if you have 2 sticks of mem in, try one at a time.

Aw, but I wanted to read the pi$$ing match. 2 guys dousing each other with liquid excretement is always good for a laugh. I would concur with deleting as long as a warning was given (just for future reference). Though, before anyone starts yelling about deleting posts, I'm standing behind Homey V on this one as of now.

I will tell you my reasoning

1) What you said had no relation to the problem. What you were refering to was when windows xp/2000 has a problem on startup, it will reboot. If you uncheck this the system will halt and not reboot so you can read the error message.

2) This is Windows 98 and not xp/2000

3) Because this is not an error the Ram will have nothing to do with it. The computer just doesn't want to shut down.

When You tell it to shut down windows tells all programs to save their data and close . When the last one compleetes it tells all devices to save their drivers and shut down or load the generic windows / bios drivers so the mobo can turn them off.
Apparently somewhere in this sequence , something is crashing so badly it is taking windows with it.

First thing to do is reboot to safe mode (when computer restarts tap F8 once a second until you get the start options menu and choose 3 safe mode)
Once in safe mode, shut down.
If it restarts, it is either the mobo, power supply or you have changed the setting in control panel/ power from shut down to restart (when I click shut down computer should....)
If it shuts down from safe mode, it is a device driver or theme isue.
Restart in safe mode and go to device manger.
Select and remove the entry for display adapter and sound card (under display adapters and under sound/video/ game controllers).Also remove any duplicated devices and anything with yellow ! or red x.
Go to control panel / sounds and change all to none.
Right click on desktop and choose properties.
Change theme to windows standard, background to none (a single color) and screensaver to none. On screensaver tab, click on energy star settings and set everything to always on and turn off never with the exception of when I click shutdown turn off computer.
Restart and let devices get redetected and drivers reloaded.
See if this fixes it.
If not download and install latest drivers for video card and sound card.

Power managment is always such a bitch, as far as I'm concerned it's more trouble than it's worth.
