Yeah really... US telecommunications is pretty messed up, the whole copper network they have was put in on the condition that the company who invested in the development hold a government sanctioned monopoly on the service. They split them up eventually, but the giants (Bell and AT&T) still hold a lot of the power. IIRC Google has a bunch of fiber all over the place but its not being used and they're keeping quiet about it, at least, that's what I heard a couple years back.

Up here, as I believe Gray linked on his fb during the election, the only govt party that didn't advertise their policy on Internet issues was the one that got in...

Basically what it comes down to is that we're not gonna get 25 megabit service in Oxford County for quite some time... At least there won't be a whole lot of help from Ottawa on that front. I catch 5 mbps on a good day, if the wind is blowing just right... :p

Last I heard about Google's Fibre was they plan to become a Nationwide ISP.
I can't remember the name of the city, but I guess it is fibre to the door for a test setup.

I like Google, they invest in long term technologies that will have enormous payoffs not only to them but to the development and adoption of new ideas as well.

They're backing away from China, another good idea, since they consider themselves a "do no evil" corporation. Pretty hard to claim that if you're in heavy with authoritarian/totalitarian governments.
