I got sick of vista running slow on my laptop, and i'm too poor to buy windows 7 so I installed Kubuntu 9.04 and using it now

One small problem my sound was working and now ubuntu got rid of my sound drive and I have no idea how to get my sound back

and when I plugg in a jump drive to usb doesn't come up with anything yet my mouse is usb


i'm such a linux noob

Methods used?

must have been a crappy install or something lol it was crashing and everything.....

I reinstalled completely and hasn't missed a beat since lol

setup a network printer but it doesn't seem to print
I hate Dolphin file manager
Windows has my computer with C: D: E: so on so forth if I put a second drive in or a partition how to I find it lol

I now have wireless working - bad driver
Sound working but not in VLC player - Fixed
I need a good Msn alt i'm using Kopete but can't seem to use my cam in chat - I use AMSN
can't find where I search for wireless networks it might be KDE sucking at doing network management - Figured it out

I love how smooth it is even running virtual box and having many things open

Kubuntu is terrible. Bob is right. Use LinuxMint KDE edition, or straightup Ubuntu.
Fedora if you want By the book Linux, but its slower
And if you want a more Windows esque install try OpenSuSe

KDE's network management varies depending on the Distro you use. Kubuntu is horrible in my experience. Mint functions well and I've had no problems with it.

Printing I haven't had an issue with but I'll look into it

Thats odd. Check to see what VLC is using. Of everything I've always had sound working in VLC when it wouldn't work anywhere else

In linux Drives fall first under the device (ie SDA, SDB, SDC etc..(OR HD, but for most serial ATA Drives its SD) and then a number for the partitions.
You can find all the drives in /dev/. Your first drive is usually /dev/sda1 but it varies from installation to installation. Check the /dev/ folder to see what devices you have available. From there you can mount them with the command "mount /dev/sd(Letter, Number) /mnt/directory you want to mount them to

I updated my problems

My take on the new Drive:
First if it is formated already, KDE will find it and show it in dolphin on the side along with Desktop etc.

Next
dmesg is your friend it will show you everything on your system in an ugly log file. If you look threw it you will find the name of your drive and the /dev assignment.

By for the easiest way to handle new drives is to install gparted, this will detect the drive in whatever state it is in and let you partition it to whatever you what.
It will also tell you the /dev assignment that Paul was talking about.

To Auto Mount
add the entery to the /etc/fstab file
etc.
/dev/sdd1 /mnt/bob ext3 auto 0 0

It is really much easier to show you alot of this, either you can drop by one day in norwich. (Friday is Open Dinner night to everyone, lol just let us know you are coming so we have food you lol)
Or i can drop by the store and give you a run down, lol timing might be a problem.

Anyway, let me know if you what more explanation on any of the above, sorry it was done quick.
