In the war of Blu Ray vs. HD DVD, the latter may just win due to this:

ya... its a shame but it seems that sony actually has won the format wars...

from what I have read a lot of this is due to the PS3 playing blueray disks

this does not bode well since sony never licenses its technology to anyone else and it just gets more expensive

Everything depends on Universal. If it stays HD-DVD, there's a very slight chance HD-DVD could rebound (however unlikely). If Universal caves, the jig is definitely up.

Current recommend ways to play high def on your computer:

-mpc with ffdshow
-vlc
-mpc with klite codec pack
-mpc with cccp

Many don't like codec packs and recommend the first two. I've had good luck with klite so make your own call.

BD+ (ie. the new DRM of Blu-Ray) just got cracked:

Took 'em about 5 weeks to destroy a system that was supposed "to last close to a decade."
