I'm a production artist at McGill, and it's an interesting atmosphere, to say the least. They usually hire people as full time contractors at first, and then as full time salaried employees if things work out well. Here is the job posting:
POSITION: SOFTWARE CONFIGURATION SPECIALIST
DATE: NOVEMBER 7, 2006
SUMMARY:
The Software Configuration Analyst reports to the Tech Support Director and is responsible to develop and maintain configuration management standards that ensure reliable and repeatable software build processes.
KEY RESPONSIBILITIES:
•Develop and maintain configuration management standards that ensure reliable and repeatable software build processes
•Enable consistent deployment of software builds to the development, quality assurance and production environments
•Maintain policies, procedures and tools related to configuration management and source control systems
•Advise on configuration management best practices and continually update skills related to new and improved practices
•Provide build management support to developers
•Work with Quality Assurance to facilitate verification of releases
•Ensure release completeness and perform verification before hand-offs
•Produce release notes, build documentation and maintains release history
•Develop, test and implement installers utilizing industry best practices
•Design, implement and test installers as required
SKILL AND EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENTS:
•Understanding of software configuration management, build methodology and release strategies
•Experience using and managing source control systems (i.e. CVS, VSS), experience with Alien Brain is an asset
•Experience with installer applications (i.e. InstallSheild, Setup Factory)
•Knowledge of Microsoft Windows platform, Linux knowledge is an asset
•Programming knowledge in Java, C#, XML, ASP, HTML, XML and Javascript, Macromedia Flash knowledge is an asset
•Fundamental understanding of networks, client/server systems and web servers
