Jason - can I use your inexhaustible knowledge ?

Heather wants a decent (not great) but decent computer for around 400. I know that's pretty low, but we're not looking at much here. She needs everything in the box except an AGP video card. Mike's got one she can have. I'm willing to pay you a small commission for your help.... I hear you're going to be down for Saturday - if you have parts by then, I will have money. If you're too busy, that's OK.

Well, Not to jump in here, but PC Options in Woodstock has corporate Compaqs (Used) that are decent machines for $250. P4's, 512mb of Ram, and a 40 gig drive.

I got one for my parents.

They're a great deal if you just want something thats an upgade and cheap.

What are the exact specs on it, Homey V? That seems pretty decent.

Otherwise, something like this would be good:

-used socket 754 mobo from NCIX ~$50-60
-socket 754 chip ~$50-60 (Sempron for new, Athlon64 for used)
-512 mb RAM ~$50-60
-cooler ~$8
-Enermax case with Enermax psu ~$50-60
-80gb HD ~$60
-17" monitor ~$30-40
-kb & mouse ~$15
-dvd writer ~$40

So you're totalling around $378 in the average case scenario after tax and all. And it would probably be a system that would kick the pants off of yours (just had to rub that in there)

I imagine I'll be over sometime during the weekend so we can chat it up then. But if she's on a tight budget, Homey V's Compaq may be a viable alternative. Plus, if they give any warranty greater than 30 days, that may make it worthwhile right there.

Im not sure the exact specs, but its a very decent machine. I believe its around the 3 ghz range.

If you want a 17" Monitor its an extra $50 but Its got onboard LAN, Sound and Video, with AGP Expansion slots and XP already installed. Not sure about the warranty though.

Does it take SDRAM or DDR? Is the 512mb from 2 sticks or 1? The legal copy of XP makes yours a lot more attractive for someone not taking the Linux route or a trip down to Juarez, Mexico ;)

Like I said, I dont know much about it
Im pretty sure its DDR, but I couldn't say for certain. Im pretty certain its one stick though. Its a legal copy of XP. CD-Key listed on the top of the case.

Bought it.

I d!ckered him down to $430 as there's no mouse and keyboard. Total you'll owe me is $440 as it'll take 2 trips to get everything (right now I have the tower and the printer). Subway/streetcar tickets will come to about $10 so I think this is pretty fair. No commission as I didn't really work on it.

I had him install a french version of windows as I figured that would get your woman's panties wet ;)

Jason, you are the man. I know Mike said that you'd be around this weekend - I'm going home on Saturday at 12 for thanksgiving, probably back by 8. If you can come by when I'm around, cool. Otherwise, I'll leave a cheque for you to pick up when you drop off the comp.

Thanks again.
