Huuuuuuuuge news from Quakecon on this game and other stuff. This really deserves its own thread, but whatever. We now know it will be the RAGE franchise:

http://www.quakecon.org/forums/showthread.php?t=9073

Overall, a lot of news was released:

-id is still using OpenGL (so it should run on Linux and the Mac)

-id now is on Steam. Everything from Keen to Doom 3. This is both a blessing and a curse. Why? Good as now id is digitally distributed. Bad if RAGE (or other titles) require Steam (I hate Steam).

My prediction? No, it will not require Steam. This is why:

http://www.theinquirer.net/default.aspx?article=41124

Valve, displaying some of their M$ heritage, refuses to port Steam (just Steam, not their games) to Linux or Mac OS X and is now banning people asking for it. Since Carmack was at the Mac world address, the game RAGE will work on the Mac. No Steam on the Mac means it's not required (I think if you buy the boxed version). Ditto for Linux then.

Windows, however, I'm not sure. Have to wait and see how that pans out. I still hold out hope that it won't require it.

-Quake Arcade Arena lets you play people on the Xbox 360. I pressume this allows Quake 4 interaction between the two for now?

-new Wolfenstein movie (see other post)

-new Wolfenstein game from Raven.

-Quake Arcade Arena will become web-based (open to everyone......yay!)

-Anna Kang (Carmack's wife) announced Orcs & Elves for the DS. It's a cell phone game that Carmack helped code and pushes the graphical limits of said devices.

Wooooooooooooooah. Carmack not using OpenGL as his main platform?

http://www.beyond3d.com/content/news/462

I *think* there will still be a Linux client, but that their Linux specialist will be in charge of getting it to work. It doesn't make any sense to me to release a Mac version (ie. OpenGL) and then not release a Linux one. Mebbe it just won't be officially supported? I dunno.

Carmack explains:

http://slashdot.org/comments.pl?sid=302231&cid=20671657

There is certainly no plans for a commercially supported linux version of Rage, but there will very likely be a linux executable made available. It isn't running at the moment, but we have had it compiled in the past. Running on additional platforms usually provides some code quality advantages, and it really only takes one interested programmer to make it happen.

The PC version is still OpenGL, but it is possible that could change before release. The actual API code is not very large, and the vertex / fragment code can be easily translated between cg/hlsl/glsl as necessary. I am going to at least consider OpenGL 3.0 as a target, if Nvidia, ATI, and Intel all have decent support. There really won't be any performance difference between GL 2.0 / GL 3.0 / D3D, so the api decision will be based on secondary factors, of which inertia is one.

...........so they don't know wtf is up. This kinda sucks.
