Yes, but those are roughly the same prices that the original Xbox launched at. They'll drop (probably) within a year or so.

apparently, over 200 games will be backwards-compatible

www.xbox.com/en-US/games/backwardcompatibilityqa.htm

but... you need special software for each game...right, ok.

http://www.canada.com/national/national ... b43b90ee49

But gamers will need a hard drive (which the core version of the new console does not come with) to play those original Xbox games. And they will need to either download or send away for the "software emulator" required for each original Xbox game to be played on the 360.

Xbox Live users will have the easiest time in playing original Xbox games. The 360 system will automatically check if the necessary software is in place and will download it if needed.

Those not part of the online Live network can download the software needed from xbox.com, burn it onto a CD (the information is less than five megabytes) and then pop it in the console where it will auto-install.

A third option is to go www.xbox.com and sign up for a CD to be sent to you. That will involve a shipping and handling fee.

While selected original titles can be played on the 360, saved game material from those titles won't be transferable.

They're lucky they're Microsoft, or I'm sure this would flop HUGE

Why?

The Xbox360 seems to be split 2 ways--the core version won't have backwards compatibility, you'll have to buy flash cards to save, and loading takes longer. The 2nd version has backward compatibility, a harddrive to save to, and quick load times. Ya get what ya want and pay accordingly.

That, and my brother has only ever played 1 PS game on his PS2 (he got the game for free). I don't think it's nearly as big a deal as everyone makes it out to be.
