I've had a smorgys worth of questions about the new "Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles" movie - pretty much all asking what the story is going to be about. That's about as easy to answer as the final page of questions on my college Maths test, but today, the film's director Kevin Munroe stopped by Gamerz Edge to talk about some of the aspects of sequel number three, which should clear up some of those questions.

Gamerz-Edge: The Turtles have seen some drastically different artistic portrayals throughout their existence; for example, everything was quite a bit darker in the classic comic, and then more lighthearted come the cartoon television series. With this in mind, what approach do you intend to take with your portrayal of the Turtles in this film?

Kevin Munroe: After story, this is one of the biggest priorities for me. This movie is really going to be a throwback to the tone of the first comics. So much so that when I first met with Peter Laird, I brought my personal TMNT issue #1 from 84 for him to sign  I was a big fan before Imagi even knew who I was. I love that book and just the raw energy of it  both in terms of the action but also the visual vibe. The question then becomes Hey Mr. Smarty Pants Director, how does that seed translate into a cgi feature in 2007? Well, were going after a moodier and darker grit that will give us a lot of negative/black areas on screen. The color palate is going to be rich, but we wont be throwing every color under the sun on frame at once. The animation and boarding will be heavily influenced by our collective love of comic book style. The tests weve done so far are looking amazing  like a hand-painted dark graphic novel. As for the Turtles themselves, well, youll just have to stay tuned for that one. Weve been working very closely with Peter and Mirage to develop the look. But rest assured that these are not bubbly turtles in a half shell from the first TV series

I think that this is bull crap, what is this CGI bulls**t what happened to the old turtles, with people in turtle suits, and corey feldman as donatello, lol, i am actually not looking forward to this at all, im pretty angry

I agree this is a big piss off and over all This is what makes Gray very very sad..

it reminds of teenage mutant ninja turtles staring a super crapy looking franklin from that kids show and those books....

Uh, that was CGI in 2001 designed for T.V.. Ever see Reboot? Entertaining, but realistic CGI it ain't.


But just stay pessimistic so that when it rocks you'll be happy.

reboot looked ok to me.. it was a little weird but it was ok.. the movie thing he did was crap and the big thing for me was how the turtles looked.. the fact he would put something out that looks this bad and then say he wants to make a movie kind of like this freaks me out..


but dont worry I kind of hope it rocks but untill I see it I am worried

Consider the fact that he himself will most likely be doing very little of the CGI on his own and I imagine his budget will be much larger than that of a tv pilot that was never aired...

Give it some time until you actual production shots before you get too upset.

The Weinstein Company and Warner Bros. Pictures announced today that they will join forces to distribute the first all-CG-animated movie in the long and phenomenally successful history of the "Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles" franchise. The announcement was made today by Jeff Robinov, President of Production, Warner Bros. Pictures, and Harvey Weinstein of The Weinstein Company. The as-yet-untitled picture will be released early in 2007.

The movie will be directed by Kevin Munroe from his own screenplay, developed in consultation with Turtles co-creator Peter Laird. The film will be produced by Thomas K. Gray and Galen Walker. The executive producers are Francis Kao, Peter Laird, Gary Richardson and Frederick U. Fierst. Worldwide merchandising rights for the movie will be exclusively represented by 4Kids Entertainment, Inc.

The two studios acquired the worldwide movie distribution rights from Imagi Animation Studios, who had obtained the production and distribution rights from the Mirage Group, which owns, nurtures and manages the "Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles" property. The new CG-animated, PG-rated movie will derive its tone from the original comic-book series and will be slightly grittier than the previous live-action pictures. The animation will be created in Imagi's state-of-the art facility in Hong Kong.

The "Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles" motion picture history began in the early 1990s, with three live-action films that grossed a cumulative total of more than $256 million domestically, adding to the entertainment phenomenon that spawned games, toys, costumes and a virtual Turtles industry. In 2003 the Turtles returned to television after a five-year hiatus, now appearing on Cartoon Network and 4Kids TV on Fox in the United States and on major TV channels around the world. Additionally, the entertainment re-launch of the "Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles" has generated hundreds of millions of dollars of worldwide retail sales of new licensed products, including an entirely new range of toys from longtime licensee Playmates Toys.

"We are very happy to have obtained the rights to this new 'Ninja Turtles' movie," said Robinov. "We think that a new generation of kids will love discovering the Turtles, especially supported by the enthusiasm of fans of the original movies, comic books and TV shows."

"Re-introducing the 'Ninja Turtles' in an animated movie will enable the filmmakers to fully realize the adventure and humor of the property," said Weinstein. "We believe that there is a global audience for the Turtles and we're thrilled to be bringing them to their fans, old and new."

Imagi USA's President and CEO, Tom Gray, said, "The Weinstein Company and Warner Bros. Pictures are ideal partners in this venture, and I am extremely pleased to be working with them. Their marketing and distribution expertise will bring the Turtles to a whole new generation of fans."
