Good employees are still laid off. If there isn't any market demand for your product, how can the company keep its employees? $hitty for the employees, but it keeps the company from going broke. Often, the employees are hired back on after the markets pick up again. Eventually, you'll gain enough experience that your time at the company will put you on the list of "full" full-times. Either that, or you'll get a better job.

Layoffs and firings no longer go by your ability to perform your job. Seniority is how all these things are decided. If you've been there 6 months and do your job better than some people who have been there for six years, it doesnt matter. You'll get the boot first.

Yeah, the experience thing might fook me over this summer at the City. All the other students got hired on 1 month before me and they're all related to people working within the organization.
