with some christmas money to burn and no pressing needs i thought it might be a good time to upgrade
the budget is 600 bucks (i have everything that i need except for a new hard drive)
so basically the parts i need to buy are Mobo, Proc and HD (though if i had to i can scoop a HD from somewhere else)
what are your thoughts? is now a good time or should i wait?
if now is a good time give me suggestions for mobo-proc combos prices and where to get them (been watching canadacomputers for a while)

as one last side note brand pref for mobo is Asus however I am open to your suggestions

All from Canada Computers:

CPU: AMD 64 939 pin 3000+ $189
MOBO: AbitAV8-3rd Eye $159
HD: Maxtor 250 gb IDE with 16 mb cache $210

TOTAL: $558 ($641 after taxes)

The 3000+ is a good overclocker, the Asus A8V didn't lock the PCI/AGP last I checked, and the Maxtor is almost as fast as a Western Digital Raptor.

If you're going for broke and insist on Asus, grab the Asus A8N-SLI........and then go buy a new video card while you're at it.

Compare prices at www..pricenetwork.ca to find cheaper prices then CC.

2005 will be all about AMD. They will be ramping up the speed this year as IBM has helped them with chip production and Intel is stuck with Preshot. Prices will likely fall. When I don't know yet as it's too early in the year to tell. I wouldn't get the SLI board as you'd need a new vid card and SLI won't be really beneficial until dual core/SMP becomes more prevalent (late 2005 or 2006). Intel will add EMT-64 to their Celeron line and nobody really knows how AMD will respond. Socket 754 with AMD 64 could get really cheap, but I wouldn't bet on it.........yet. Intel will be making dual core seem like a really big thing this year, but I don't think AMD will (they have the speed advantage and don't need to resort to it yet--they'll put one out, but it will just be a check box proc until later for them).

Summary: the usual Jew response == wait.

If ya need one, buy it. If not, wait 'til Reading Week. By then AMD will have released their speed upgrade most likely, Intel will counter, and then AMD will counter. AMD's counter will be what makes things interesting.

Either that or just buy a dual socket A system and encode away.

What system do you have now? Cuz if it's an AMD XP 3200+ or greater just stick with it. 64 bit won't be mature enough to be worth it until near the end of this year at earliest. If you're games are playing cruddy and you've got a 3200+, just go buy a new video card. 6600GT's should soon be retailing for about $250. More powerful than a 9800XT and they've got SM3.0 for future titles. Best bang for buck card out there right now.

main:
athlon 2500+ (barton)
1 gig ddr 333
120 seagate (ide)
GeForce 4 TI 4600
Asus A7N8X-D

Secondary
Athlon 2000+
512 ddr 266
60 Maxtor
GeForce 4 440 MX (came with the mobo)

Then I'd just see how far the 2500+ would overclock. If the $$ is really burning a hole in your pocket, just buy new ram for it or upgrade your video card. If it will run at around 3200+ speeds, you'd be good for quite a while.

It's not as good, but this is more significant on the AMD side. Socket 754 will, most likely, retain 64 bit capabilites (ie. 64bit Semprons).
