ok, yes i'm dumb
with this message board service, you need a place to host it correct?
and places like angelfire and that wont work right?

The almighty messageboard is hosted on either a Pentium 166 or 233 (I can't remember which) in Windsor at Queen Zeus' house. The modem was recently unplugged and that's why the board was down.
Angelfire cancelled my accounts because of "adult content"...........so, no, the board isn't hosted there. It's off a harddrive in the comp I was talking about before.
I'm sure Homey B can go into much further detail than I can (ie. kernel #, PHP version, etc.)

The comp's harddrive = webspace
That's the way he has it set up.

If you had it continually connected to the internet, yes.
A static ip address would also be necessary/advisable.

As long as your ip is static..........a spare comp to put it all on. I wouldn't want to put it on the comp you use everyday.
Time to start digging through those old parts.

Sorry about dissapering, I have been travalling about and have had little sleep.
To host a phpBB2 message board you need a webserver that has support for php and MySQL. While it is possible to use your desktop, I don't recomend it. Daily use of a desktop eventually leads to memory leaks, or the need to reboot from other sources.
This message board is being run on a Cyrux 187.631Mhz Pentium machine, running Debian... I don't even think it is version 3.
The quick anwser is no, angel fire would not be a good choice. 1 and 1 .com offers good deals from time to time. If you get one there , go for it.
If you are on cable it should be easy, send me a PM with details and I will be more specific.
Also I should note that if you are hosting your own domain IE KalNet.com you also need to run a BIND9 server on the machine.

ok basically what i want is
me and matt want to create our own webpage as i am sick and tired of using stuff like angelfire
and we want to have a discussion forum just like this one
the only problem is neither one of us know how to set it all up
now is it easier for me to set this up on my own, or could any of you host this for us? and still have us able to make changes to everything

Yes, I could run it, and yes you would have full control over it.
You could even direct your own URL to it eg
www.matandphelps.com
