To the Moon, Mars, and Beyond

By now most of you have probably heard about Bush's ambitious new plan for space exploration. Manned missions to the Moon by 2015, and Mars a few years later. Here is an article about it.

Apparently they are getting $1 billion in new funding and $11 billion is being transfered from other areas to help pay for it.
Personally I think this is really exciting, but I wonder how the Americans plan to cover all the costs, what with the war being so expensive already.
I guess there is also a chance that Canada could send it's own mission, although I find this highly doubtful. The gov't would never give them the money.

This is interesting though:
Canada is already working on a moon mission with India.
I had no idea.
In anycase I think that it's about time the shuttle got retired, it is almost 30 years old.

I wish Rumfield (sp?) would stop having these ideas that what worked for yesteryear will work in today's economy. His advice to Bush has been awful. The war, as a money creator (and a number of other things), has been a failure. While the missions JFK started did help bring the U.S. to its financial plateau, I highly doubt this will help the present/future day economy.

I find the Daily Dirt's take on this rather humorous:
Preznit Dubya's attempt at a "Kennedy Moment" turned out to be more Chappaquiddick than Cape Canaveral… all wet and sinking fast! Since announcing his intention to give NASA a new mission - to build a permanent Moon base and launch a manned Mars flight in twenty years - the home viewing audience has been uncharacteristically lackadaisical about the whole deal. Some wonder where Dubya's gonna get the trillion dollars such a program would cost, afte handing over the already paltry remains of the collective American birthright to his puppetmasters and financiers… hence explaining the need to invade other countries. Still others wonder why now? To get the Star Trek vote? That wouldn't make any sense, because everybody knows Trekkers always vote for Lyndon LaRouche. So it must be something else. An emergency escape plan, perhaps?

They wont. Bush will delay the plan until after the election than quietly scuttle it. That or it wont even make it that far. The American economy cant afford the money it will take to establish a moon base or a manned trip to Mars.

Hey thanks Jon. I was given an assingment to write about the Mars expadition. Like what people think about it, the costs involved, if other countries will help out or not, what would come of the world if we did make it to mars, cause so much was invented after they landed on the moon, so this helps out a lot.

I'm with Pinter and Bob on this one, we should get out of here before out planet is too screwed to allow us to leave, then we can create a new utopian paradise on Mars.
Seriously though, Mars is pretty bad already, there isn't really much we could do to make it any worse.
