Locata, a new competitor to GPS?

The new ground-based tech can pinpoint locations outdoors and indoors

While GPS struggles to find your exact location at times, a new positioning technology could step up and give a more accurate area both indoors and outdoors.

The new positioning technology is by Locata, and it uses ground-based equipment instead of satellites to send a radio signal over a certain area. This signal is reportedly a million times stronger than a GPS signal.

While GPS mainly gives outdoor locations, Locata's ground tech is tackling indoor locations such as huge shopping malls as well. Its receivers can be small enough to fit inside a cell phone, so if shoppers are lost in a large mall, they can use Locata on their smartphone to find a certain area.

When tested at the White Sands Missile Range in New Mexico, Locata worked to within 18 centimeters along any axis. GPS typically has location resolutions of a few meters. Locata's technology could bring the resolution as far down as 5 centimeters in the future, making location pinpoints even more precise.

Locata's signal is much stronger because solid objects like GPS signals don’t block it as easily. However, Locata could still use some help in urban settings with many buildings packed so closely together.

It is suggested that Locata's tech will not replace GPS, but rather, work with it to offer both satellite locations and ground-based locations for greater accuracy in different situations. For example, the Jigsaw Positioning System uses both Locata and GPS to guide the placement of drill rigs in Western Australia.

Locata Corporation and the U.S. Air Force have announced that the Australia-based company has successfully completed the critical Design Review (CDR) contract phase for a Locata network that will enable the U.S. Air Force to deploy a new ground-based, centimeter-accurate "truth-reference level" positioning system for use in GPS-denied environments.

Meanwhile, Leica Geosystems has launched its new Jigsaw Positioning System (Jps), a mine management system that features Locata’s technology to provide equipment monitoring and guidance applications with or without JPS’s integrated GPS.

The USAF 746th Test Squadron (746TS) awarded Locata a multi-year, sole-source contract for the project in July 2010, and the CDR was the last milestone to be met before the USAF committed to a technology demonstration in the USA. Locata's Non-GPS Based Positioning System (NGBPS) — sold commercially as a LocataNet — will provide accurate positioning when GPS is jammed over 2,500 square miles (6,500 square kilometers) of the White Sands Missile Range (WSMR) in New Mexico.

The project's most significant milestone to date, completion of the CDR demonstrates the company's detailed LocataNet design as capable of meeting the non-GPS based positioning component of the 746TS Ultra-High Accuracy Reference System (UHARS). The contract now moves to an initial deployment over approx 600 square miles (1,500 square kilometers) at WSMR for further testing in October 2011.

"I am excited about the potential Locata's technology has to dramatically improve our reference system's accuracy in a navigation warfare environment," said Christopher Morin, technical director for the 746TS at Holloman Air Force Base in New Mexico. "The Locata team has made great strides over the last year to develop the hardware and software required to track low- and medium-dynamic flight profiles across the range of altitudes that we test the DoD's next generation navigation systems.”

Morin said that the prototype tests conducted in Cooma, Australia, and the post-processed reference solution delivered during the CDR “clearly indicate that Locata has captured and is successfully modeling the various sensor, antenna and tropospheric errors.”

He added, “I expect that the technology demonstration scheduled for early FY12 will give us the confidence to field this system throughout the 40 by 60 mile area of WSMR we use for navigation system testing."

The 746TS is scheduled to present a paper on the NGBPS program at the Institute of Navigation (ION) GNSS 2011 conference next week (September 120–22, 2011) in Portland, Oregon. The paper will outline the history of the 746TS positioning capabilities and present results from relevant Locata flight tests.

Based in Griffith ACT, Australia, and led by CEO Nunzio Gambale, Locata’s new radiolocation technology provides precise positioning in many environments — indoors, in rugged terrain, underground — where GPS is either marginal or unavailable.

"The 746TS CDR is probably the most significant technical deployment milestone in Locata's history to date," said Nunzio Gambale, CEO of Locata. "We are proud to be working so closely with the legendary 746TS, an entity well-known throughout the positioning industry as managers of the tri-service GPS Test Center of Expertise (COE) for the U.S. military. Our CDR success is also a testament to the inventions of Locata co-founder David Small and the outstanding Locata team. . . .”

Locata brought together many years of engineering experience and numerous Locata technical achievements to deliver NGBPS technology to the 746TS in the flight trials, including:

· demonstrating Locata's autonomous, nanosecond-accurate TimeLoc synchronization capability when Locata transmitters (LocataLites) are placed up to 30 miles (50 kilometers) apart

· demonstrating that TimeLoc can be "cascaded" from one LocataLite to another in multiple "TimeLoc hops" of at least 30 miles (50 kilometers) per hop

· showing that LocataLites can be successfully attached to various high-powered transmit amplifiers to deliver much longer ranges, yet continue to maintain accurate TimeLoc

· demonstrating that Locata receiver tracking loops perform adequately under demanding "military spec" speed, acceleration, and jerk stresses

· demonstrating Locata receivers acquiring and tracking Locata positioning signals at a range of at least 30 miles (50 kilometers)

· showing navigation solutions with tropospheric models that adequately mitigate the large tropospheric errors encountered by terrestrial signals at these long ranges

· demonstrating a carrier-phase "truth-reference" solution to the 746TS of developing, manufacturing and demonstrating new transmitter and aircraft antennas to provide both satisfactory network coverage to the WSMR test area and adequate gain and multipath mitigation capabilities for the aircraft.The new antennas were developed in collaboration with Cooper Antennas Ltd of Marlow, Buckinghamshire, UK.

Locata is pursuing an OEM business model in which they work with product developers and system integrators and derive revenue from licensing fees or royalties from their customers’ product sales, according to Gambale, who has spent more than a decade developing the Locata system with engineering colleagues.

The company sells LocataLite signal transmitters, built by contract manufacturers for the company, only to system integrators, who in turn design and manufacturer the end-user equipment. Currently, Locata-capable receivers are available as field programmable gate array (FPGA) products, but Gambale says that the technology has been integrated into a credit-card–size module, with chip-level designs representing his company’s ultimate goal.

Leica’s Jps system, launched at AIMEX 2011, Asia Pacific's International Mining Exhibition held September 6–9, 2011, in Sydney, Australia, represents one of Locata’s key partnerships in launching the company’s new technology.

The augmentation product is designed to extend GNSS positioning in open cut mining operations where, as the mine pit is deepened, the steep walls can block GNSS satellite signals. The new Leica Jps system can process signals from GPS, GLONASS, Galileo, and Compass, as well as LocataLites.

Their stuff is pretty incredible if it lives up to what it's advertising. Since Leica is the one implementing it on survey equipment, I'm inclined to believe them. Definitely something to watch out for.

Accuracy of ag GPS:
I sell agricultural GPS units. With RTK we can hit .375" accuracy (losing 1/16" of accuracy for every mile you move away from the base station) over unlimited time, on WAAS we can do 5-10" 15 minute accuracy with longer than that easily moving 10-15 ft. I don't have much experience with it but you can get a virtual RTK base station info over a cell connection that is compiled from base station networks. The accuracy falls between WAAS and having your own RTK. https://www.ngs.noaa.gov/CORS/ is one source of this info, there are other private solutions that I can't think of right now. Generally require a subscription though. You can also use OmniStar but that requires a radio and subscription to receive their correction signal.

Before trying to get SurvCE use the internal - NMEA GPS receiver, you need to setup the internal GPS from Windows Mobile Desktop.
Start > Settings > Systems > Tap/Select External GPS icon,
From GPS settings menu, select activate [x] Manage GPS automatically
stay in GPS settings menu, select GPS hardware ports, change from none to > tap/select COM3, select 9600 Baud rate
stay in GPS settings menu, select tap/select COM6,
Tap OK on Task bar
Returns user to System menu, tap/select [x] returns user to Windows Mobile desktop.

Start SurvCE,
Select New/Excisting job,
Select Job Settings | System as needed,
Select Equip | GPS Rover menu
Select Manufacturer: NMEA GPS Receiver
From GPS Rover | COMMS menu, select Port: 6 Baud:9600, N-8-1
From GPS Rover | Receiver menu, select Unknown GPS antenna, (uses internal GPS antenna), (x) Vertical, 0.000m Antenna height, (using hand held)

Tap green check mark to accept all these changes.
User returned to Equip menu,

From Configure |General menu, uncheck option for Store Fixed Only (GPS)
Set GPS readings to 1

Select Equip | Tolerences
Set resonable HRMS & VRMS tolerences for L1-only GPS
HRMS:3 Meters VRMS:5 meters or similar
Tap green check mark

User return to Equip menu,
Select Equip | Monitor/Skyplot menu

You should be able to see Quality, Position, SATVIEW, SATINFO data populating these displays
If your seeing SV data, your good to go...

Select Survey | Store Points menu, start collecting data
The Windows Mobile Desktop Settings may vary somewhat, depending on the controller device your using,
but this should get you pretty close.

Hi Brent

I hope you are doing well, and enjoying you weekend.

I want to thank you for all your help regarding the settings that you supplied me with.

I followed your instructions and it work perfectly. I managed to get a hole day of work in yesterday doing GCP surveys. But for some reason today trying to do a line stakeout things did not go so well.

My settings is still exactly the same as per your instructions.

I will again upload Screenshots of my Base and Rover Setup.

My problem now is that, I am getting a good fix and everything looks good. But the moment I try to do a Line Stake Out though Carlson Survce the whole program is running slowly again.

What I mean by that is, the logger takes for ever to update its position. Is almost like the corrections are coming in slow. When moving around it is very slow to update the coordinates to the new position.

Do you maybe have an idea what might course this delays?

I am using the following RTCM3 Messages, I know Igor at one stage said that Survce are having some problem with some of them.

1002 (GPS1 observations) 1HZ
1006 (ARP station coordinates) 1Hz
1010 (GLONASS L1 observations) 1Hz
1097 (GALILEO) 1Hz

Should I maybe add or remove one of them???

Or might the problem be inside of Carlson SurvCE?

I was wondering if the problem might be with the Tolerance setting in SurvCe?

Attached you will also find two photos showing my settings.

I did take a video with my phone of how ServeCE behave once it is connected.

Hi Nick,

I see that you are on v2.10, while v2.11 is available now. Could you please try to update to see if this changes the situation? There was an issue with Bluetooth latency, but it is long gone since version 2.9.3.

Unfortunately this looks like SurvCE is for some reason really slow at parsing incoming NMEA data. I will contact them about it. What leads me to this this conclusion is that all other data collection software does work just fine.

Thank you for your reply, but unfortunately it is not good enough for me.

I need you to please, urgently look into this as soon as possible.

I am in the middle of Uganda with out a WiFi connection to run an update. As I am writing you this now, I’m using my phone as a hot spot to get a weak cell tower internet signal. I am not sure if I can use 2 phones to do the update on both Reach RS units? Please advice.

Secondly, I can not understand Emlid marketing SurvCE as a product to use if it has not been tested in the field properly. Could you explain that for me.

Please make contact with SurvCE as soon as possible and try to resolve this matter…It might just be something small. a Setting that need to change.

I am in the field and need to work with your equipment. And at this stage it is not possible to do line and point stakeout work with Reach Vew.
You have no idea how frustrating it is to have to wait the hole time for the logger to update its position.

Please Igor, I need you to resolve this matter for me. I can not tell you how urgent it is.

Hi Nick,

I am really sorry about this situation. Unfortunately we do not have control over SurvCE as we are not developing it. From the communication perspective we are simply sending NMEA messages to Bluetooth. The only setting within ReachView that does affect NMEA output is GNSS update rate. If you have it at 5Hz, NMEA output will be at 5Hz as well.

Just to verify, there is no coordinate delay when you are looking at ReachView? So it is only delayed in SurvCe and only in line stakeout mode?

Now tell me one thing please, WHY is it advertised on Emlid website that Reach RS is compatible with SureCE???

I bought the software becouse you/Emlid promoted it?

I am in need of a Solusion here Igor.

Im on site and can’t do my work.

I spended over a $1000 on Carlson SuvCE. Not becouse I liked it, but becouse Emlid advertised that it is compatible.

What must I do now???

I need an answer ASAP please.

At this point we need to hear from SurvCE support. The integration has been tested by Carlson and thus SurvCE is listed as compatible. I know that many of our customers are using it.

If you could provide some help with debugging it will be easier for us to find a solution.

Just to verify, there is no coordinate delay when you are looking at ReachView? So it is only delayed in SurvCe and only in line stakeout mode?

I had installed a trial version of Carlson SurvCE on my Topcon FC-500 data collector. At the time (about a year ago) I had it working but I didn’t really work with it. I just hooked it up, confirmed that data collection worked, and then uninstalled. I will try to work with it tomorrow but I can’t make any promises. I just can confirm that previously they were compatible.

Hello Nick,
I installed the latest version of Carlson SurvCE trial version on my Topcon FC-500 data collector and connected to it via Bluetooth. I am in town at my office and I couldn’t spend a lot of time on it but I did get decent positioning data. One thing to remember is that most of the time I was working with a FLOAT position.
I successfully saved several FIXED points but in line layout I was in float. I went into line layout mode and everything acted normally. There was no noticeable slowdown and positioning updates happened immediately. I wouldn’t be able to suggest what your problem is and I can’t guarantee anything. I tried it in both Reachview v.2.9.3 and then v.2.11.0 and I had exactly the same results.
Update: I got it on fixed solution for awhile while in Line Layout mode and it updated its position normally.

I would start by turning off Galileo and maybe glonass and just work with the bare minimum. See if that makes any difference. Does it do it only in fixed mode or what about float mode?

I see @PotatoFarmer has already answered your question. Just want to sum up: to use Reach RS2 as a base with the 3rd-party rovers, you need to output from Reach correction messages with the following frequencies:

1006 ARP Station Coordinates, 0.1 Hz
1008 Antenna descriptor and Serial Number, 0.1 Hz
1004 GPS, 1 Hz
1012 GLONASS, 1 Hz

1006, 1008, and 1004 messages are minimally required. You can also find more info on using Reach RS2 as a base in this guide from our docs 6.

Does the Fendt also need to be set to wgs84?

The coordinate system of the rover should be related to the same datum as your base station.

I assume that you use Average Single to set the base. It provides your base with WGS84 coordinates. That’s why you need to set a coordinate system related to WGS84 on your rover as well.
