There's a big meteor shower on the 4th of January in the early morning hours, north sky. If you're up at that ungodly hour, look up... :)

The real space race was in the ending stages of WWII when American and Russian armies tracked down nazi rocketry scientists to employ in their respective space programs. That blog looks pretty interesting, def gonna bookmark it.
