It's a good thing M$ is a company devoted to security:

........too bad they were hosting malware on their sites, eh?

Holy Crap! have they figured out what is causing it?

Maya, Catia, Pro/Engineer among others all show the drops. It probably won't get better until the first service pack. That's why M$ has been doing this:

http://overclockers.com/tips01108/
http://overclockers.com/tips01111/

They're forcing OEM's to sell Vista to consumers. However, they're giving businesses the option to buy XP as they realize they would p!ss off a lot of people otherwise. Forcing people to settle for Vista will cut back XP support. So, the next year will be pretty sh!tty for driver support, but should pick up after that. Businesses won't accept that so they get XP.

As to why it's so low, uh, sh!tty coding on both ends? I dunno. Engineering apps are highly sensitive to code changes so a kernel change like Vista bugger things up. But whenever M$ changes an OS the performance is always sh!t for about a year.

UAC hacked:

http://www.techworld.com/news/index.cfm?NewsID=8142

What I find most interesting about this article is that M$ doesn't consider UAC a security feature and left some stuff deliberately open for ease of use. If that's the case, what's the bloody point of having it?

I expect alot more little bugs like this to start popping up over the next little while.

Any consideration of the fine details comes in second to that one inescapable conclusion. This is an unstable operating system.

I used Vista yesterday and my magic still works. I crashed it in 10 minutes

Chuck Norris and Mr. T walked into a bar. The bar was instantly destroyed, as that level of awesome cannot be contained in one building.

This shouldn't really be used as a benchmark of Vista performance, I once saw Mike crash a microwave while trying to re-heat a burrito...and it wasn't even plugged in.

That's awesome.

Dempsey should really wh0re himself out to electronic companies for failure testing

And I agree. After having had to troubleshoot Vista at work, it's not a product I would even consider until the first service pack comes along.

I have not had any issues with it besides 3rd party applications & peripherals, and that is NOT Microsoft's responsibility to make everyone else's bull shit work. The reason things get better after time is mostly because by then everyone else is caught up.

Some might argue that the point of an OS is to run third party apps....but I wil agree that there is no excuse for sloppy code.

I agree with Homey J. If I only ran Windows Vista, what applications would I have? A few sparse, anemic apps that wouldn't really let me get anything done. Some of the comments from M$' former DirectX guy sum up my feelings on the matter of Vista's performance (see article I posted to know what I'm talking about). What they went out to achieve, they did so quite poorly and the OS itself is still not ready for primetime. I still think it's a decent OS, but nowhere near XP w/ SP2. They should have either done a clean cut from NT or not even bothered with it all.

On the issue of sloppy code, well, I think there's a bit of finger pointing for both parties involved (app and M$ themselves).

Though, interesting enough, M$ will be providing the driver for Ati/AMD's new card tv tuner. In fact, it will be the only driver. Ati/AMD won't even be providing one. It's definitely setting an interesting precedent.
