You're missing the point Matt.
You've posted your suggestion, Gray considered it and turned it down. If you have nothing else to add to the conversation then you should either try and find something to help (Other than what you already said) or keep your opinion to yourself.
By repeating "Buy it!" Over and over, you sound like a spoiled child demanding attention.

I beleave that Blizzard has perfect right to only have multi play only on there servers. It makes sence, hell if they had it other ways then why the hell would you buy the game in the first place. There would be no incentive to go out and buy the game because there is no benifit to buying the game in the first place.
Many games use privet servers for there games for just this reasion.
You should just be happy that there not charging us to use there servers. As many games nowadays are.
Stupid comies

I think it is fine for a compay to run its own servers eg. Id. However, to not allow others to also run their own is stupid. In fact this is one of the reasons that I rarely buy Blizzard Products.

Matt, your argument is null and void.
By your logic, no one would have bought games like Quake 3, UT2K3, BF1942, CoD, Freelancer etc... since they dont have to play MP games on proprietary servers.
Blizzard restricts people from playing games on their servers because they view every customer as a potential thief. Now personally, I dont like be treated like a theif, but hey, if you do, thats your call. The only companies that I can condone this being done on is MMORPGs simply because they are ENTIRELY online and the company needs to control the content of the game. WC3 is not an entirely online game, and if I want to play it with my friend in Timbuktu on a server I create, I should have that option. Thats the bottom line.
If I buy a game, its because it deserves my money, not because I want to play the multiplayer portion.

well there is a first time for everything... i am actually jumping in on matts side on this one. First off to say the game is not worth paying for is well and good. However to say you only want the multiplayer option of the game, that suggests that you like the game enough to play with someone else therefore you should be paying for the work someone else did.
And while i do have burned games, all the games I actually play when i am not at a lan are legit.
As for the servers I agree with Bob on this one but only to an extent. There will always be hackers, however i think that you should be able to run your own server without the option to turn off cd-key checking. While this wouldnt keep people from cracking servers, it would limit it for the simple fact that there are people like Bob who like to run/have different servers and i highly doubt that he would spend the time trying to figure out how to turn off the checking.
As for the battlenet thing, i have heard that blizzard has really started to crack down on it in an effort to encourage people to buy wc3. I havent seen or heard anything about this prog for some time. sorry but i will keep my eyes open in case i do come across it

Gentlemen, we got 20 calls about the David Hyde-Pierce incident. And as you know, one call equals a billion people, which means 20 billion people were offended by this

CD key checking != running own servers.
Big difference.
Quake 3 has you check your cd-key and then you play where ever the devil you want. The majority of us also bought the game (some of us more than once). Clearly, a properietary server is not needed to encourage fit internet play. In fact, I've had less problems on Q3 servers than I have on Battlenet. The only time I had a problem connecting to a Q3 server was when they were implementing Punkbuster. Battlenet craps out on me twice a month. Not an overtly large amount, but when they say they have they're own servers to present a better gaming experience.................well, I call shens.

I see your point Matt, its just not valid. My stance on this isnt going to change at all. Blizzard does not have the right to force people to play only on their servers. Thats the bottom line.
