The chick next door hasn't complained yet after I installed SP2, firewall on, and automatic updates.

Backup yer data, give a go, and if it hoses it--just reinstall.

Most of the problems with software have been worked out with SP2. The firewall is easy to disable as is all the other Security centre B$, you just need to do it manually. Stability seems to be about the same as with Regular XP, I've gotten a blue screen on both of them so its just as reliable as ever.

Ai, Folding@Home core96 runs my page file over 2.5 gigs every now and then and locks mine up with a BSOD.

i see plenty of m$ blue screens i dont know what they are talking about the most stable ever... unless the other versions of m$ were that unstable and i just didnt know it

I have never seen a blue screen on my computer .. the only time i can think of was when I was having Ram problems and that was a hardware issue.. I have never seen a blue screen when my computer is running and not having a hardware issue..

I dont know what u are talking about..

I have also only seen a blue screen on my computer about twice..and both of those times were due to unstable hardware cofigurations. Other than that I have never had Windows XP completely lock up, even after running for days with out a re-boot.

Anyone who thinks that Win 98SE (I don't even count ME *shudder*) is more stable than XP either forgets how buggy 98SE was or has not used XP for an appreciable amount of time. I think there is no question that XP is the most stable home version of windows yet produced (windows in general however may tend to be less stable than some other OS's)

It was fast...and it didn't have all the added crap that XP has, but it was really pretty unstable - I mean, come on....It was based on DOS.

it is true sooo easy to crash 98

I really like XP, and i'm not going to say it won't crash but it's mostly third party software crashing it.

Again I have never seen blue screen with XP myself.

Since SP2 though I like XP alot more

If it's ever randomly rebooted, that's a BSOD. I turned that off as I wanted to see the reason for the necessary reboot.

You say based on DOS like it's a bad thing. DOS, in it's final days (and its 3rd party continuation today), was/is one of the better OS out there. Heck, at the end it was even integrated with Linux in some 3rd party versions. The power of DOS + Linux is a potent combo.

Win98 was better in the fact that it was the OS that secured MS as *the* majority OS provider for the desktop. 95 broke open the doors--98 was the flood that followed. As for XP's reliability.......when you really start to push it, it crashes just as much as 98. Almost any of my engineering programs (excluding simple ones like AutoCAD) can bring the b!tch to its knees when I really start to do stuff. Combine this with the bloatedness and you have something I'm not overtly fond of.

Though, I'm far more fond of it then I was 2 years ago. I have come to find the thing tolerable.
