What about launching servers? What if there are network issues?
You need to know linux if you're going to admin a Linux server.
Besides, if Bob's servers are going to be used, then Bob will admin his babies.

Things go smothly at a LAN because of lots of carefull planing before hand. Thus the problems at the last LAN.
But I agree we do have to try this at some point.
As for the money, have them pay when they register on-line Via Pay-Pal.

The idea always was that the RNBD would get large enough to warrant this. See my post in the LAN Party section for my offer, Pimpin Matt.

Just out of Curiosity Thanatos, what is the KiloWatt usage for 100 computers plus server and equipment. I worked it out once, left the book at home. But since you worked it out already please refresh my memory.
To Thumperup, what do you think about this rush job attempt for the summer? I still think that TSB plan for 2005 is more realistic.
Edit:
also I would like to point out that I have worked on very Large LAN's here at the University, some of the staff love slave labor

I said I've never been to a LAN party. I also said that I'm speaking from the background of someone who's been involved in other large scale events.
I was part of a group in school and we had a LAN set up in our private office. There were only 4 computers, but we still had a good time gaming (unreal tournament, quake, warcraft), so I'm not totally out in left field. I am familiar with the basic concepts of a LAN party, just inexperienced.
My point is: I do have a clue about what I'm talking about. I've done gaming on LANs, but nothing more than 5 people getting together for an afternoon (not really a LAN party, more like a LAN picknic).
I also never said that I don't support the idea. Based on discussions with Kal, Ghost, and Tempus, I don't think the resources are available at the moment. If I'm wrong, enlighten me, but don't count my opinion as invalid because I lack the same experience that you have.
And by the way, you didn't know this, but I offered to help when the mega LAN happens (if I'm not stuck at work), not with technical stuff, but there are other jobs to be done.

I'll help with the RNBD, but for the MegaLAN if you advertise, accept money, and then bail because you don't collect enough I'm in no way associated with it. People would be p1ssed if they go to all that bother and then you don't deliver.

Ok for all of you people that think Matt is talking about this year 100 people your wrong
I know Matt's posts are confusing without actually talking to us, but what we plan is for next year, no way we could do it this year.
I say we shoot for 50 though

Alright, here's what Matt needs to do.
Sort out exactly what he wants to do, when he wants to do it, etc..
All the details for an overview (Location etc arent important just yet) and post them in a nice clear way so that EVERYONE understands what he wants to do and there is no more confusion.
As for hitting 50 people this year, I'd say shoot for more like 35-40 if you want to make it bigger. Its not that many less and the barn would still be able to handle that load power wise I think. That would eliminate alot of problems and give Matt a more managable LAN while still giving him the chance to get his feet wet so to speak.

I understand that i have not posted all the info i have been able to and i apoligise for that, on another note, i have been posting from work so time is of the essence, i realy dont want to get caut.
just for the record
i have 3 possibel loactions
we have 3 servers not including bobs
and just between Thumperup, TSB and myself we could host a lan for 74 people. not using anyone elses equipment or servers.

Excellent. This is what I was hoping for. If you're gonna do a big LAN, you're pretty much gonna have to get used to doing everything yourself. Here's a thought for ya. With new servers, new staff, and a new location (potentially), why don't you make this LAN completely yours? Names, rules, tournies, etc. all to be determined by you and you alone. I imagine you're not gonna call your MegaLAN the RNBD, so why not start running this LAN exactly like you would the large one?
