First off, I agree partially with Pimpin Matt. The linux lovers should take up the cry.

However, some of us at this point in time cannot. I'm sharing broadband with 6 people with a cap of 10 gigs of download AND upload cumlatively. Obviously, downloading distro's aren't an option. Also, school is rather time consuming (at this point in time I should be doing geology, for example). In fact, and you heard this here, I don't have a single game installed on my computer right now other than minesweeper, free cell, hearts, and solitaire. Yes, the dark times have descended upon the land, folks. Quite frankly, getting the distro's are bloody near impossible for me at this point in time.

Seeing how Dempsey is on dialup (and crappy dialup at that), he also cannot get it. I believe Pinto has a Debian install, but I imagine for a first time user a distro like Mandrake, Slackware, etc. Ever try installing Windows version 1? I didn't think so (it was a bizzo).

Some of us, however, are doing what we can within our means to not go Microsoft. For example, my dislike of XP grew to the point that I uninstalled it and put on 98 (which, on a side note, I actually bought. If all the Windows people love their operating system so much, why don't they buy it? That, to me , is just as hypocritical NOT TO MENTION ILLEGAL. If you love your OS so much fork over the cash. Here, I'll even help you out:

(you'll need to copy it all into another window--it was so big one would need to scroll sideways to read my post so I put the "enters" in for ease of reading)

Here's the summary:

-Home upgrade only $143.99 (you'll only need to legally own another Windows OS, install over top of it, activate, and never upgrade your computer again unless you phone Microsoft and tell them your gonna. Oh yeah, you'll also need to phone them everytime you format. Easy now, isn't it? ;) )
-Home edition only $299.99 (all the crap from the ugrade only now you don't need to install 2 OS. Will cut your install down from the 5 gigs necessary in the previous to 4 gigs. Still those lovely phone calls, though).
-Pro ugrade only $299.99 (no more phone calls, but still 2 OS installs......though, what's 5 gigs for an OS install and buggy overlays, eh?)
-Pro edition only $479.99 (yes, for only the price of a Ati Radeon 9700 Pro, you too could own XP Pro. None of the hassles of the previous ones. But your still stuck with the bloatware [Roxio], inferior products bundle [firewall], hard disk hog [system restore], spyware [everytime you play something in media player, it's logged and sent to MS. Everytime you use "find," what you look for is logged and sent to MS], ludicrous licensing [per machine rather than per person] and the buggiest MS kernel ever [check out firingsquad on XP for full explanation]).

Though, I'm sure certain computer dealers in our group could get it at discount prices, right? Which makes me wonder why they haven't.......

I'm typing this up in Opera and I only use Open Office for my MSOffice needs (does all I need to and it's a 1/3 the size).

This summer, what with Homey B's unlimited bandwidth, I intend to finally make my "Ultimate OS" machine.

So, watch who you call hypocritical there Pimpin Matt. At least the people here are law abiding citizens (well, at least when it comes to purchasing their OS's )

You laid down your gauntlet; I'm taking it up. You gonna take up mine and put your money where your mouth is? It's only 1/2 a grand

Not anger--it's a flame. I never take debates personally. They're just differences of opinion and at the end of the day, you do your thing and I do mine. I hope that this is well realized. My arguements are never a personal attack; just my feelings and logical reasonings on the given subject.

Hey anybody who's been in my house knows I buy games. As for 98 I do have the upgrade but the disk is so scratched it doesn't work anymore and I use a copy. As for xp I only have it to connect to the network to download ARRR and would never buy such crap. Sorry if my posts have become personal. I definetly lack the Jew's capability to keep it at arms length. So finally, in hopes of ending this vigorous and bloody battle, er debate, I do not like windows, matt does, we both have it, Mike out

All I gots ta say, is ........ good :) I too own all the games that I like playing. My opinion on the matter is that I'll play games that I don't own if other people wanna play it. Other than that, I'll buy the ones I like.

On a side note, what version of XP do you have Pimpin Matt? Cuz if it's XP Pro Full Edition....................STRONT!!! You're one rich opdekontneuker!!!

(only Dempsey will truly appreciate these comments.........I apologize in advance for my foul language).

If I was a stickler, I'd say you should only use Home (then you'd learn to hate XP what with no upgrading, always phoning in, and the limited features), but...........meh  Hey, if yer buddy's got free schtick to give away, I'm always looking (though, I think we're all ready all aware of this. Don't know why, though ;) )

What if we stole our OS, don't really mind its apparent shortcomings, (in fact kinda like it) and have only a very general and unfocussed dislike of Bill Gates?

Take a read, the 2nd/3rd paragraphs mainly. I'd say I hold a view very similar to Tycho's.
http://www.penny-arcade.com/news.php3?date=2002-07-22

I do intend to eventually buy all the games that I love... but that's a lot. I mean... I play a lot of games. Next up on the list: Morrowind Gold Ed. and Civ 3 (everything). It's kinda like a "steal game, wait for Gold re-release with xpacks at a good price, buy game" and it doesn't bother me too much at all.

Well, then I'd agree with you on some points, disagree on others, and fail to comment at all on the remaining few. ;)

Yeah, I usually buy all the games I deserve buying even if it takes a couple of years. For me, anything above $30 had better type up my thesis, do my fluid mechanics calculations, and lick my @rse clean at the same time. Most games don't do this and so I wait for them to hit the $20 or lower price point. Appeases my conscience and keeps my wallet thick. ;)
