HL2 EULA illegal?

I found it incredibly dumb that in the U.S. as soon as you open the box, you've agreed to the EULA. However, you have to open the box to read the EULA. So you've agreed before you've even read what you're getting into. I hope it's not like that here.
I still hate Steam.

Good stuff guys....I'm just wondering what exactly the purpose of this photo is?
Although it is pretty cool, It kind of looks like your holding up the edge of the photo with your hand.

Not that I know of.
EDIT:
Though, the first few pages do actually show you what the different levels of detail are.
