CPU cooling question for JEW (and anyone else)

ok so I went out and got the Pentium D 820
I know I know not the best chip in the world but it was really cheap and I have read quite a few reviews saying that it overclocks like mad some as far as 3.9 ghz

i was wondering what kind of cooling you could suggest.
I was thinking about maybe going water cooling but I dont know the first thing about that so perhaps a fan would suffice.

If you're gonna go for the air route, I'd recommend these in this order:

#1 Thermalright XP-90C (requires additional bracket)

#2 Thermalright XP-90 (requires additional bracket)
#2 Asetek VapoChill Micro™ EXTREME PERFORMANCE
(tie between the two)

#3 Thermaltake Big Typhoon

#4 Zalman CNPS7700-CU

The XP-90C, quite frankly, is about the best of the best when it comes to air coolers. It's actually about as good as a low or medium capacity water kit. It can also be run quite silent.

The XP-90 is also very good, but you need to run the fan at full speed to get the performance of the XP-90C.

The VapoChill is quite cheap, easily orientated, and cools well. The only reason I don't rate it higher is that I've never used it and the XP-90C is a bit better.

The Typhoon is good, but it doesn't cool quite as well, and it's a bit much $$$.

The Zalman is good, but it's huge, quite heavy, doesn't cool quite as well, and it's a bit much $$$.

Basically, for a good air cooler, you're looking at around $100 after shipping, taxes, etc. All of these heatsinks are available from Big Foot Computers or ADP Mods.

NOTE: Case ventilation will be extremely important with an air cooler--even more so with your Presshot..........I mean Prescott

Watercooling kits ranked in order:

#1 One you put together yourself

#2 Swiftech H20-APEX Extreme

#3 Swiftech H20-120-x ver. 2.0

The one you design yourself will, most likely, be the best bang for buck. I recommend these parts: Swiftech 6002, Swiftech MCP 655 (or 650), car heater core, Tupperware reservoir, and Danger Den Maze4 Acetal. This will cost less than kit #2 (and about the same as kit #3), but will also cool your video card. Plus, if you buy stuff used you could save some mad cash.

Kit #2 Features the best cpu waterblock and pump on the market...........but you most certainly pay for it.

Kit #3 is bang for buck if you don't wanna shop around.

Deals on waterblocks are pretty easy to come by on RFD. The kits listed here are available from Big Foot Computers.

how difficult is it to do water cooling? and is it the more efficient way since I can also cool the vga and chipset that way?

Yep, just add the GPU and the NB block... might want a bigger pump and rad is all.

also should ask if there is much difference between the 6000 and the 6002 as I see a few 6000 for sale

as well 1/2 or 3/8's?

I don't know much about the model numbers, you will have to wait for the Jew with that one. As for the pipe size, I believe that my rig is running on 3/8ths... hum, actually I will have the check.

The difference is European design and North American. Europe is lower pressure more flow, NA is the reverse.

Basically, go with the piping that matches the greatest number of your parts.

most of the blocks come with both connectors, it is the pump that is usually fixed.

Homey B is using 1/2" ID pipe if I remember right.

6002 = 1/2" (so a good pump would be the Swiftech 655 or 650)
6000 = 3/8" (so a good pump would be the Swiftech 350)

Actually, traditionally it's the reverse:

European = low flow, high pressure (ie. Alphacool NexXxoS XP)
N.A. = high flow, low pressure (ie. Danger Den Maze 4)

Either works, but since we're in N.A., it's cheaper. And, actually, now N.A. has both (Storm for high pressure [technically an Australian design made here], Apogee for high flow).

NOTE: I always assume a flow rate of between 0.5 and 1.0 gpm. With blocks like the Maze4 it would be much higher, but those values are generally accepted).
